Embarrassing with all the posts I've accumulated since I first registered to decide whether I want to get a Mac, but I have finally taken the plunge.

I just ordered a PM 800 from the ed store. They added another $125.00 discount today on top of the $200 rebate and the education store discount. That brought the price down to $1178! (plus tax and shipping).

Even if this model is about to be discontinued, that's a darn good price!

Congratulations! I'm sure you'll be happy with your new G4!

Wow, and I was just about to get the 733MHz model. Are you sure that the $200 discount works with Mac's purchased through the Apple Store for Education online? If so, I'll forget the 733 and get the 800.

That's what they told me. I asked today when I placed my order, yesterday when I called and last night I asked again at my local Apple Store. They all agreed that it applies. The coupon does say that you can't use the $200 rebate it if you buy from an education reseller, but the ed store is not a reseller so it should be fine.

The ed store is also offering an instant $200 discount on the 933. So if you can stretch that's a great deal as well. The screen discounts all also apply.

I just called the Apple Store for Education and they told me that the $200 mail in rebate would not work because there is already a $125 instant rebate. The sales rep told me that I couldn't use the two rebates at the same time. Humm...I wonder what's going on?

I just called again and talked to my salesperson, Serge, who reassured me. 1-800 409 5381 Ext 2416. The rebate applies or I will come looking for him.

Go to http://www.apple.com/education/k12/p...#powerfuloffer and read it. It says that the instant savings offer will take place of any similar "mail-in" rebates. I just don't want to get stuck paying more, I sure hope that the rebate does apply, but I'm not sure.

That might be because you are in the K-12 section. Last night at the Apple Store they said something about the offer not being combinable with the "off to college" program.

I'm in law school so I fall under a different section of the ed store.

Well if you go to http://www.apple.com/education/hed/p...#powerfuloffer which is for higher education (college and universities) it states the same thing. I have to have my parents by the computer for me because they are teachers, although I am a college student, I don't have a credit card, so I can't buy the Power Mac and get the rebate if it does apply. I think what is happening is that Apple has made the Powerful Offer into two seperate offers, one for regular non-education purchases (which offers more on the rebate because it cost more to buy it for the regular Apple Store) and one for educational purchases (that's why its only $125, Apple figures that people are already getting a discount so they lower the price on the rebate and make it an instant rebate because they want to spark up some educational sales before school starts). I could be wrong, but I guess we'll have to wait and see...

That's true. But there will be hell to pay if they don't pay it. Oral contracts are enforceable and the plain language on the rebate coupon is explicit. I'd be quite happy to take Apple to small claims court if they refuse (it would be fun!) and defending the suit wold cost them a lot more than paying the rebate as promised.

I think what I'm going to do is call up outpost.com (fry's electronics) and see if they will match the price for the Power Mac G4 800MHz model, as well as the $125.00 instant rebate. Then I would apply for the $200 mail-in rebate from Apple.

Bad news, I called outpost.com today. They won't match the price of the educational price for the Power Mac. I guess I'll be getting the 733MHz with 128MB of RAM, and no modem now.

Well, do you qualify for the cash rebate if you received the instant rebate? Was that ever determined? Hmmm, it is hard to pass anything up at these discounts. This must mean that something big is going to be released in July, right?

Although, IMHO just faster DDR Ram doesn't do much if that's what the July release will be. You need the new processors to be released for true speed increase.

My first mac arrived today and so far I love it. Setting up was a breeze as promised. After years of using Win 95 (and NT at work) the operating system seems a bit alien. But I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Beautiful as it is, though, this mouse has got to go. I want my scroll wheel back!

Meh it scored another user.. my mom is looking into it.

Plop on a 17" monitor, with both the $200 monitor and $300 computer rebates, edu discount, etc, and we get the whole setup for about $2500!!!!

$2500 for a 933, 60gb/256mb/superdrive/speakers

Hehe I'm happy

I just got off of the phone with the apple educational store, they told me that the $300 mail in rebate could not be sent in if I was buying a 933mhz G4 tower with the $200 instant savings. I even had the sales rep ask his supervisor, the answer was still no. So what's the deal? When you ordered your 933mhz they told you that you would get both the $200 instant and $300 rebate savings? Let me know who you spoke with, that's quite a deal.

Okay, so maybe a better question is whether the mail-in coupon will be honored if sent in. Reading the fine print on the mail rebate, it isn't very clear unfortunately. On-campus promotions cannot be combined, which this is not. Combining with other promotions may be allowed if specified by the other promotion. In this case, it's just "instant" distant with no fine print.

My bet is that it will be quietly honored when sent in.

Great, glad to hear some reassurance.

We'll be ordering a 933/17" studio through edu store with both discounts next month for my mom

Just called and spoke with "Kevin". The coupon for the 800Mhz and the mail-in rebate can be definatly be combined.
I asked him if he could state this in writing, but he declined. Now all I need to find is a good deal on a Flat panel monitor

I had to call customer service last night to get a copy of my receipt. While I was on the phone I asked (again) just to make sure that nothing has come down since I ordered my machine.

I was told if there were a prohibition it would say so clearly on the coupon. There was another promotion a few months ago that didn't allow it and she thought that people might be just assuming that this is the same. It's not, and she confirmed it.

Of course, the real proof will be in "eight to ten weeks" when they send the check. And what's with that? Not even the IRS is that slow!

t'was going to say.. on the apple edu store site, the promotions page ACTUALLY HAS WRITTEN that the 'big deal' and 'powerful offer' rebates may both be combined, and both are instant

Exactly what kind of proof do you need to make a purchase from the Apple Edu.Store?

Do you get billed personally or does the school get billed?

Do you have to be a teacher or can you work for a school in another capacity?

Uh, why not go to the Apple web site and check, or call them up and ask? You'll get a better and more accurate answer that way than asking us for our second-hand opinion.

The "Big Deal" promotion only applies if you also bought a monitor, however. I don't think you can combine the education "Powerful Offer" ($200 instant rebate) with the regular "Powerful Offer" ($300 mail-in rebate). So if you didn't buy a monitor, you may be out of luck. The existence of both these promotions might be the reason why some people are getting "yes" answers and others are getting "no"s.

One other question (for SimeyTheLimey):

How did you get your system so fast? Between your post saying you "just ordered" and the one saying it had been delivered, there was less than 27 hours total! I placed an order on Friday, and my system is still in the "Being Assembled" stage.

How long does it take on average between ordering and shipment? I'm an impatient, sad little man.

I paid for overnight shipping ($55.00) and bought the stock model without any changes (not even ram). I am also an impatient, sad little man!

I don't know if that's exceptional or average. It's my first mac, after all. (and I love it!)

Mine is my first mac, as well.

I've been using PCs since 1991 (when I was 9), and never really cared much for the Mac until OS X came out. I finally decided to switch because I wanted a UNIX system to do my programming for school on, and wanted to be able to watch DVDs/burn CDs/use Office/etc. My choices were either a) buy two systems, one unix and one windows, b) dual boot, c) spend months tracking down open source drivers and replacing hardware, or d) buy a G4 tower. Needless to say, I chose D.

I think my mistake was removing the modem. Other than that, I just got the stock model. :-)

Funny, same here, my g4 is my first mac, I started using PCs when I was 9 (1996 I believe), and never cared about macs until OS X came out... funny how all this is the same, lol.

One thing that did help me decide was comparing common boxy looking computers with the beautiful big cool looking g4

I just heard too many things about XP. Conflicts, viruses, driver issues, privacy concerns. I use computers, but have little interest in how they work and don't want to be bothered with those kinds of details. So far so good.

earlier in the week i mentioned that I also bought a g4 933 tower (1 week ago today, it comes on thursday) I just wanted to add that it is my first mac purchase. I've been a mac fanatic for almost 4 years now and Ive been using a TiBook that my school gave me for the last 1.5 years. Before then i was strictly PC. So with my first purchase i guess i am officailly a mac user that apple can tally up. As i read these posts I realize a lot of people are starting to switch over. i love it

Yay! My system is here! Delivered 3 full days before the "estimated delivery date" listed on the tracking page.

Now I just need to wait for my mom to show up with the big monitor. She was supposed to be here an hour ago. Grrrr.

Congrats on your purchase. I was going to buy the new iMac when it first came out, but got tired of waiting and ordered a G4/800 instead. After only having it a few months and already adding a second hard drive and Radeon 8500, I can easily say I'm glad I went with the tower <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Upgrading is such fun.
