I was wondering if anyone out here uses a treo 90 (I think I have that number correct...the color non phone treo unit). Does that Sync with a Mac? Handsprings website says it does not synce with a Mac running OS X (even in classic). I was just wondering if this is true.

If you use one, could you give me an overall review of the product. I am considering exchanging a Palm M500 for it as it seems superior in every way. But I was just curious about that.

Peace,

O
B unce!

Yeah, the treos are awesome. The phone versions are even better than the 90 organizer, but it's all good.

Regarding the OS X compatibility, I have heard different things. Over at TreoMB, if you go down the page a little, there is a news item about the 90 and OS X, and it appears from the comments that there is a way to sync up the Treo 90 with X.

Well I have a Treo 180 (sorry not the same as yours, I have the phone bit too) and I love it! My first PDA, ahhhh...

Anyway, it hotsync's fine with OS X. Just don't install the software that comes with it (OS 9) and instead download Palm Desktop for X off the net...worked no probs for me...good luck

I got the Treo 90 b/c I need the expandable memory. If you use the "MissingSync" shareware you can connect in OS X with Zero problems. The software is marketed for the Sony Clie, but it was the only way I could get the 90 to work in OS X. The OS 9 software from Handspring works, but I got errors just trying to accesses menus and the like.

It works like a dream in OS X with the above mentioned shareware + Palm Desktop for X.

I'm looking into getting a treo90 myself and I was wondering if anyone has not only successfully synched a treo with OS X but if anyone has done it successfully with EntourageX. I've seen some info about a conduit that a japanese site is offering, but I'm curious if anyone has used this successfully.

thanks!

cheers,

But it works perfectly in VPC. Seriously. It never fails. I've got avantgo and wordsmith working perfectly. I boot up VPC, sync, shut it down. It's really the only thing VPC is good for. It's too slow for everything else.

edit: btw, if you're getting a treo 90, get it from staples.com. They have them for $279 and there is a $40 off coupon on dealprovider.com. To save you the searching, use coupon code 76051 when you go to purchase. That's $239 + tax. 1 or 2 day shipping is included! Cool, uh?

Here's the link to dealprovider: http://www.dealprovider.com/jump.php3?lid=7858

edit 2: the coupon expires today, so hurry! Actually, I've seen this offer before, so it's probably recurrent.

What is your timeline for Mac OS X support for my Treo 90? Do you have a
firm date for the release of an OS X native palm desktop? Currently I'm
having to resort to virtual pc as my computer does not and will not have OS
9 on it. Thanks.

I don't care if it works ok with the missing sync. I don't care if it work ok (actually, great) in VPC. This is just a slap in the face. Well, take that Handspring. F'ing bastards.

Thats kind of strange...I've read numerous posts saying that people are currently syncing their Treo's with Palm Desktop 4 in OS X. Will someone using a treo clarify this for us?

It supposedly works with the missing sync from mark/space but I'm not going to spend an extra $30 for an unsupported implementation of syncing with an unsupported model. It's just complete BS. BTW, the Treo 180 and 270 work, but the treo 90 has a different usb something or other that keeps it from working properly with OS X and palm desktop. But instead of fixing it for us, they just decide not to. Handspring has seen the last of my money, that's for damn sure.

I bought myself a Treo 90 last night. Its going back today. The thing is a really nice product, but the software is horrid. it is even flaky under OS 9. Untill handspring releases X compatible Desktop software, stay away from this.

It even failed to work under Windows XP VPC. Dont bother with handspring until they decide to bother with us mac user...

I have a Treo 180, but I never got any email about OS X compatibility. Maybe they only sent it to Treo 90 users? Check out this page from the support section of their web site:

"Can I use my Handspring handheld with Mac OS X?

For most handhelds except Treo 90: Yes. Handspring's version of Palm Desktop 2.6.1 is compatible with the Classic environment of Mac OS X, to our knowledge. This software is not yet available in native Mac OS X format.

Treo 90: Due to a change in the USB hardware used in the Treo 90 from previous Treo and Visor handhelds, the current version of Palm Desktop 4.0 for OS X is not compatible with the Treo 90. Handspring is working with Palm, Inc., on this issue and hope to address this in the near future."

This is totally different from the "we have no plans for OS X support" email that you got. Maybe we should send them some emails so that they come out with a CLEAR statement, one way or the other, so that no one is confused by this issue, which I certainly am now. They need to clarify this, pronto. If they are planning on NOT supporting OS X, I'd look at selling my Treo 180, since I will be migrating completely over to OS X soon.

The email I got was in response to an email I sent specifically asking for OS X compatibility information. What they say on their website is a typical hedging statement. Kind of like Apple saying, "We're looking into supporting Windows for the iPod." It's just a political statement. I think that the email I received leaves no doubt about their plans, or lack thereof, for OS X compatibility. Note that the email was specifically about the Treo 90 because it appears to have different USB specifications. I'm not holding out any hope for OS X compatibility for the Treo 90 and nor should you. They say in no uncertain terms: we will not be supporting OS X with the Treo 90.

In a strange way, I'm glad they said that because it has made me give up some techo-lust and use a perfectly usable Newton 2100 until there's something that's better not just newer. Here's hoping for a PDA using some of that great Newton technology.
