Hello, I am new to the Mac Worl and just bought a G5; my Windows PC is full of anti-virus, spams, you name it. My understanding is that Tiger is much more robust than Windows; but do I still need some kind of protection ? How can I lean my drives from temp files ? Thanks for the advice !

There is no need for anti-virus software with OS X. You may wish to install a firewall, however. OS X has a simple built-in firewall, and there is also one available called BrickHouse.

But buying something like Norton Anti-Virus for a Mac is a complete waste of money. They won't protect you from any viruses because there aren't any known viruses for OS X!

What about spyware? I've heard that osx is much more secure but can no spyware attack it?

There is no spyware that has been written for OS X.

Virus protection isn't a bad idea if you do lots of file sharing with Windows computers. They won't be anything but a nuisance to you but you could pass on a virus to a peecee user. But get other things, like more ram, befoe buying A/V stuff.

As far as spyware, there's only been one, a version of the p2p app Limewire a few years ago. Other than, zilch.

Get yourself comfy, with some beer or wine or whatever (you may need more that 1 can/glass if you want to read the entire page), lean back, and enjoy: http://securityawareness.blogspot.com/

Short version: no viruses, no spyware.

No [B]OS[/b} viruses.

You can still pass on Word macro viruses. Worst that happens is that you try to send someone an infected .doc file, and their mail server's AV zaps your message into la-la land. We've had that happen at the office, and it's quite annoying.

"Where's my document?"
"I sent it 2 hours ago."
"I don't have it."
"I'll send it again."
<time passes>
"Where's my document?".....
