mustard based; not mayo based. you don't need those other things listed in mustard base. so i picked other.

I will accept any form that does not contain onions. Scallions, sure. Chives, bring 'em. Onions, ew. Because I am leery of anything that has crunch that may be onions masquerading as celery, I don't really want celery in there either. I suspect I feel the same way about pickles.

Mayo with a bit of mustard, paprika, tumeric, whatever herbs are handy, kscallions, chopped boiled egg. Cherry tomatoes as garnish.

I've also had one that's without mayo, instead there is oil, vinegar, and bacon and that is goodness.

I suppose I like many types, just as long as it doesn't contain bacon and it's not made with too much vinegar or sugar. I prefer the dill variety.

Then I'd take a mound of it and put it on a kaiser roll. mmmm.

But as for sweet gherkins - banish them to hell! For they are a nasty, vile plague upon the earth.

I agree with Andi, apart from the bacon part. I don’t mind a bit of onion, provided it’s not raw; just slightly sautéd is fine, as long as they’re not raw. Not crazy about celery either, but will eat it with no big fuss.

Dill is quite essential in potato salad, though. And curry powder. Both are very central.

Edit: I’ve also never in my life heard of potato salad with pickles/gherkins in it. Sounds quite out of place. I like pickles (and, to a lesser degree, gherkins), but not in potato salad, surely!

Potatoes, new, boiled in their skins. Slightly crushed with the back of a fork to increase surface area.
Oil, mustard, vinegar, lemon juice and parsley. Black pepper.
Dill pickles or ideally cornichons. Scallions.
Hard boiled eggs, diced. (The eggs form a kind of deconstructed mayonaise with the oil and mustard)
Bacon and sliced wieners.

Yum.

PS: I've also experimented with anchovies in the dressing, which works really well. Heat the olive oil gently, melt the anchovies, proceed as above. It adds a deep, salty savouriness.

PPS: andi, that wouldn't have been mine, would it?

My mom used to make a type of potato salad where she used Marzetti's slaw dressing, mayo, and mustard. Eggs, too. But no relish.

I like potato salad. I am a fan of potato salad. But actually I only like the potatoes, and I throw everything else in the trash.

In this way, I am like most Christians today. I say I am christian, and I believe in only certain parts of hte christian faith, but I disregard everything else.

Why I don't just say I agree with some things but I am not a follower of christianity, and am instead my own person with my own beliefs is beyond me. Some people just like being part of the herd.

^ This was definitely not the thread I’d have expected someone to somehow twist into being about religion. Apart from it being odd and quite a stretch, was that really necessary? Sometimes, a potato salad really is just a potato salad.

No wonder you don’t like potato salad, if you keep adding ducks to it. Ducks and potato salad just don’t mix.

I like potato salad. Straight from the tub ('coz I'm rock and roll like that). No idea what composition - just eat whatever the maid buys in.

I voted "Other".

Anything with mayonnaise in it makes me gag. Anything with chunks of egg in it make me gag. Anything with mayonnaise and chunks of egg in it would make me vomit almost immediately.

I had a mustard-based potato salad once (in a German restaurant, I think) and found that to be most yummy. If I were to make potato salad--a highly, highly, unlikely event--it would have the following ingredients.

Potatoes
Mustard
Bacon
Dill (just a hint)
Onion (raw spring onion or sautéed red onion)
Vinegar
Salt & Pepper (to taste)
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

I hate onions, mustard, pickles, and pickle juice so I don't like most potato salads.

I prefer the salad chilled, but warm and fresh (as long as I just made it) is fine too.

So you’ll not be wanting that egg salad sandwich then, I take it?

(Life without egg salad must be hard. You poor, poor thing.)

Agreed on the (raw) onions and mustard.

This puzzles me. Do Americans eat potato salad warm? That sounds frightfully odd.

Over here, potato salad is always made with cold potatoes, and it’s always served cold. It’s real ‘beat the summer’ food, and thus naturally not warm food. I also have a hunch our potato salad looks a bit different from yours (going partly by that rather vile image osiris (?) posted in the Guatemala sink hole thread). The most common type of potato salad here looks something like this.

No, most Americans eat it cold. I won't eat it warm anywhere else because of fear of spoilage.

Yeah, but it's an analogy I've used for years to Christians who aren't really Christians but think they are.

No sir, in my ever humble opinion that link shows a proper looking potato salad and it damn well should be served cold. I don't know what kind of abominations these folks are eating, but I pity them for it.

And for the record, sweet pickles are the grossest of all pickles. They add a touch of suck to anything they are put into, including people.

the only "hot" or "warm" potato salads i've had are those referred to as "hot german potato salad". i'm not a fan of it. too much/strong of vinegar.

traditional american potato salad is served cold; made from cooked potatoes obviously. usually mustard or mayo based (or a combo of the two). as mentioned above, i like a good mustard base, sans vinegar.

Other: mayo and a touch of mustard, cut up boiled egg, sliced green olives, chopped celery, chopped yellow onions, ground black pepper. Not "dry," but not sticky either.

I like vinegar in German potato salad. And sweet pickles belong in TUNA salad, not potato salad. Just a few, well chopped. I would also put celery in it, but my wife dislikes celery. Sometimes we finely chop onion for tuna salad, too. Oh, and hard boiled egg goes in tuna salad, too.

I like a variant of the homemade/country style potato salad that omits the egg chunks. Never been a hardboiled egg fan.
