Given our recent history, it's not hard to believe that people fall for an online fraud... but what's amazing about this story is the amount of emotional involvement, and how easily the kid began to take on the aspects of the lie himself. I'm this is only a tiny portion of the emotional and psychological morass.

Honestly, I have no idea.
It does seem strange that he would fall for it, but some people are suckers for the right kind of scam, so it's plausible he was duped. I don't know the man, but a lot of people have strong emotional reasons to believe and even perpetuate lies, even when they know it is otherwise.

I find it very very very very hard to believe he was 100% fooled. Also, it was just made known that most of the phone conversations were voiced by the man. It just gets more and more unbelievable.
