People trying to sell tickets to Barack Obama's inauguration as the 44th president of the United States may face a fine of up to $100,000 or a year in prison, if a U.S. senator has her way.
Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California introduced a bill on Monday that she hopes Congress will pass this week, ahead of Obama's January 20 inauguration. It proposes prohibiting the sale of inaugural tickets.
"The inauguration of the president is one of the most important rituals of our democracy. The chance to witness this event should not be bought and sold like tickets to a football game," she said in a statement.

I agree that it is dumb. I don't like legislation that tries to protect idiots from themselves. If you want to spend thousands of dollars to a free event, knock yourself out, just don't default on a loan to do so or do something that affects me!

In a way, I can see this. People are contacting their congressmen to get tickets, and obviously congressmen don't have enough for all the requests they're getting, so they're having to make some decisions on who to give them to (<cough> highest donors <cough>). I think it's pretty low of those folks to turn around and sell them when they got them for free.
That said, I think it's completely moronic to make it a crime. I think the proper recourse in this case would be to just invalidate the ticket - you break the rules, you don't get to go to the party. Simple as that.
If we really want to decide who goes by market forces, then since the government is putting on this shindig, they should get the money for the tickets, and use it to offset taxes.
