My 1.5 year old Sony miniDV handicam has a bad ccd. I am leaning to replacing the camera rather than repairing. Am I stuck buying a Sony video camera in order to view my old tapes or is DV tape format a standard so I could buy a more reliable (and less expensive) base Canon model and still be able to view and transfer the video tapes made on my dead Sony? If the tapes do play on cameras from another manufacturer then there should be no quality difference on replay or transfer, correct?

miniDV is an industry standard. You can even buy external miniDV tape decks if you work with a lot of tapes.
