I just upgraded my Mac from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6 and have discovered a change in the screenshot tools, specifically when capturing a specific application window. As you know, in order to capture a specific window, you press Command-Shift-4, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera which you hover over a window and click the mouse to capture just the window.

In 10.4.11, this would give you a .png file with just the window. I have found that in 10.5.6, you get a .png file of the window with a “shadow box” around it as part of the image. Upon pasting into other applications, the shadowbox is disconcerting.

The Grab application seems to capture just the window but is nowhere near as convenient as the direct key sequence above. Is there a way, without a third party application, to directly capture just the window without the shadowbox?

Open up a terminal window and enter this command:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true

You then need to log out for this change to take effect. But after that, your screen shots will no longer include drop shadow.

If you decide that you want the drop shadow back again, repeat the command but replace the true at the end of the command with false.

Alternatively I'd recommend you give skitch a go:

http://skitch.com

Especially if you ever need to place screenshots online. Free online storage and easy sharing! Plus you can annotate.

If you do a lot of professional screenshots for manuals etc. I recommend you try Layers, which takes photos of all the elements on your screen and puts them into separate layers in Photoshop:

Wow, good tip on that Layers app. What a cool idea.
