Is there another way to get back to the first screen that has the wallpaper and large clock displayed without putting the phone to sleep and hitting the home button again?

If all you want is a large clock, then just get one of those clock apps that displays a large digital clock on screen and put it in your main toolbar or popular menu.

I use Night Stand for this...works well enough, especially as an (annoying) alarm.

For the "large clock," I use the Kensington "Rise & Shine" app from the App Store. Old school number-flip goodness, works landscape & portrait.
