I have a 15" 500mhz TiBook and just purchased a 12" Aluminum PB. I would like to swap the HD from the 15" to the 12" (and vice versa). The 15" has a speed of 7200 and is all set up for my use. My question is this, can I simply swap drives and assume the machines will both boot up and run normally or will this create a problem?
Thanks in advance.

Besides the difficulty of removing the drive in the 12", you have to make sure it is a 9.5 mm drive. Anything taller won't fit. Other than that caveat, you should have no problems.

I had my local Apple service center do the swap for me. I think they charged me $59. I had OSX 10.3 Panther installed on both drives, so it worked flawlessly. Working on the 12" AlBook yourself is supposed to be tricky, and voids the warranty.

Is the drive in my PB (15") the right size (9.5)?

It's exceedingly unlikely that the TiBook has a drive taller than 9.5mm -- even my old PowerBook G3 came with a 9.5mm drive.

Assuming you're running Mac OS X on the TiBook, and it's current, you should have no trouble. Just make sure that the version of Mac OS X installed on the TiBook's drive (before the swap) is at least as recent as the version the AlBook shipped with.
