I'm going from an older G5 to a new G5. Will Migration Assistant transfer everything over or do I still need to transfer some stuff manually? This would be main hard drive only.

if you check all the boxes, everything you need to have transfered will be transfered. Nice, simple and easy

Not necessarily everything you've created/modified will be transferred over, but most everything will. Congratulations on the new G5!

It does transfer all you want, not everything, though
I've used it numerous times and haven't had a problem.

The only problem is that it will not transfer any kernel extensions that may be installed by some applications. There aren't that many out there that do, but if you have one it can be a problem figuring out why something won't work right.

I've used it and it didn't transfer a few things such as APE module but that's about it. It even copied the exact spot I had stopped an audiobook I was listening to.

Don't forget to repair permissions afterward, nevertheless.

Also doesn't copy any thing you've compiled/installed yourself and put outside of your home directory - eg. / usr/local/bin (I assume since that directory is not part of a default OS X installation). Nor does it copy over symlinks that you have added to any of the hidden directories (eg. etc) to link to stuff you've put on your system (eg. FINK installed libs or such).

Not a big deal for many users, but something to be aware of.
