I've got an iMac that I want to leave on for long periods of time with a static image showing, but I'd rather not have the display go black or have a screensaver come on in order to prevent the image burning in. Is there a screensaver that merely dims the screen...or perhaps puts a dark translucent image over the original image so that it can be seen, but dimly?

If your iMac has an LCD, displaying a dark image would actually burn the screen in faster. LCDs are the opposite of CRTs: white is the default "off" position, so lighter images would protect the screen.

Something like LotsaWater would probably be your best bet:
