Well I'm not under the impression that everything I type is funny.

Those last couple were more of a pointless discussion.

Doesn't seem much different than customer service where people are talking all the time.

I would have to kill everyone in my office.

Talking to your computer will never work. The only reason they did it on Star Trek was... well, actually it worked quite well on Star Trek.

Thinking more about it, It seems nobody interfaced with the computer on Star Trek except Kirk.

The reason it worked well on Star Trek was that the voice interface was only used for certain things like data retrieval, recording logs, and activating simple, common functions. For everything else like data entry, navigation, and complex actions the computer consoles were used (in combination with PADDs in TNG and beyond, and what looked like just pads of paper in TOS).

Why did the helmsmen have to "engage?" Why not just tell the computer to "engage?" And why did they have a frickin crew at all?

Apparently my memory didn't serve me quite as well as it could have. The pointing device I was talking about before was called the FELiX, not the Cat. Same idea though...

Also, the design was apparently much 'improved' beyond the version I saw in my friend's basement:

Here's a review of it: Altra's Felix Pointing Device

I recall seeing a mouse that was essentially upright like a joystick, but the whole thing moved like a mouse, the buttons were triggers on the stick. Good Ergonomic design, I kind of want one.

But beyond that, I think that someone needs to develop a tactile system for a changing interface. The iPhone interface, which has something beneath it which can rearrange for tactile contact. That's what I'd like to see. I expect interfaces to by dynamic in the future, and input devices will be addons, only for special situations. Somewhere between Minority Report and the iPhone.

Can't mean the iPhone as it has already been designed and near launch.

My neighbor has one. They're actually really comfortable. Although I was more then slightly surprised since they are both multi millionaires and their house is very tastfully done, so when I saw this in their living room it looked wildly out of place.
