Just wondering whether you can take out the battery while using mains power to preserve it? is there any point-i would have thought there was an automatic cut off of power to the battery when charged

yes you can. its recommended that you do it if you use your laptop as a desktop for long periods of time.

If you're not going to use your battery for a while, charge it to 50% and remove it. Run it through at least one charge/discharge cycle every month.

But be advised that Apple has designed the Intel Macs to fall into a low-performance state (clockrate goes to 1Ghz) when the battery is removed.

so how much does a battery cost/does it cause a problem if you get a new one
