It should be titled, "When Social Justice Goes Too Far". ERmahgerd, someone killed a lion! Wake me when society gets equally outraged over the harvesting of body parts from the unborn, while they're still alive. At least Cecil was dead before they started skinning him and cut off his head.

I suspect I'm going to regret asking, but what?
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Glad you asked.

In the second video, we find out explicitly from Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Mary Gatter that abortions performed with feticides aren’t viable for fetal-tissue donation. If digoxin is used, it renders the fetal stem cells unusable. (See the footage and the transcript.) Knowing this, Nucatola’s graphic explanation of how to “crush” unborn babies to maximize organ retrieval requires a clarifier. These babies are being strategically maneuvered, crushed, and dismembered under ultrasound guidance—while still alive.
Why Planned Parenthood Can't Donate Tissue From Babies

Being pro-choice is one thing (I am), but this is some truly vile and sinister shit. Makes killing a lion seem positively trivial (as long as your conscience isn't warped beyond all recognition).

As if the whole Cecil thing isn't politically charged, right.

Dentists make 200-400k if they have their own practice. Anything over 80k is extra. They charge doctor like prices, even for a cleaning, and can pay their hygienists and other staff minimum wage. The 65k it might cost to kill a lion a drop in the bucket.

edit: Just remember, the business is a racket and prices are high because insurance is involved. Thats what drives prices up in every industry insurance touches.

Median pay for a hygienist is $70k/year or $34/hr.

My dentist, who is not cheap, and is really, really good, doesn't have a secretary, a hygienist or use gas because, and I quote, "then I'd have to pay people".

OT: I'm not going to stop you, but I could never quite get on board with killing as entertainment.

I'm aware killing can be entertaining, but I think that's an impulse best curbed.

I think it's detestable and the only hunting I personally condone is for food, but going after the hunter instead of the gov'ts that allow him (and hundreds of other hunters each year) to hunt big game, is ridiculous. Attacking the dentist and destroying his life makes you no better than him.

I don't think it's the same thing. I don't condoning doxing the doctor, but he has to take responsibility for what he did. If the doctor thinks that hunting lions is cool and a fun sport, he has to accept the backlash of people who disagree. More so, I think it's reasonable to ask that the dentist should face a court if the prosecution decides to proceed with filing criminal charges.

This isn't as big news over here as it appears to be in the US, but from what I can understand, he hired someone locally to "procure" a lion, and that local help did so by leading a lion out of a national park - where it would have been illegal to shoot - to present it for the dentist in question. Not knowing the local laws, I don't know if that behavior is legal. If not, I guess a conspiracy charge could be levied against the dentist for hiring the people to procure a lion. I do think that if you hire someone to "procure" a lion in the area close to a national park, you have to understand that your local help might do something like that.

Now, does the punishment - being plastered all over the Internet as the Mengele of hunting - fit the possible crime? Nope.

(Also: How many had heard of that "celebrity" lion before this?)

Why? It's not the public's job to try and convict him, that's for the courts. Social Justice is a cancer and it's slowly killing the rule of law.

There is hunting for food, hunting for sport, and then there is shooting fish in a barrel. Endangered fish. Beloved fish.

That takes a special kind of a*****e.

It's not that surprising. It's just a different kind of status symbol for the wealthy.

If it had been some type of rare wildebeest or muskox no one would have given a shit.

The dental profession in this country is a huge racket.

Also hunting of over populated game (deer) and invasive species (boar) should be encouraged and is necessary. People do it for sport but in reality its a huge positive for the native ecology. I am also cool with animals that are bred purposely for private hunting reserves here in the US as they are regulated rather tightly and provide incentive to grow numbers of animals that are are being killed off in their native countries to the point of near extinction.

And what happened to the guy that killed the last black rhino *on Earth*?

Nothing.

So I'm confused as to how this is a Big Deal.

The locals hadn't even heard about the lion, so apparently he wasn't very famous to them.

NY post article, one of several with the same tone.

Winston-Salem, N.C. — MY mind was absorbed by the biochemistry of gene editing when the text messages and Facebook posts distracted me.

So sorry about Cecil.

Did Cecil live near your place in Zimbabwe?

Cecil who? I wondered. When I turned on the news and discovered that the messages were about a lion killed by an American dentist, the village boy inside me instinctively cheered: One lion fewer to menace families like mine.

My excitement was doused when I realized that the lion killer was being painted as the villain. I faced the starkest cultural contradiction I’d experienced during my five years studying in the United States.

Did all those Americans signing petitions understand that lions actually kill people? That all the talk about Cecil being “beloved” or a “local favorite” was media hype? Did Jimmy Kimmel choke up because Cecil was murdered or because he confused him with Simba from “The Lion King”?

In my village in Zimbabwe, surrounded by wildlife conservation areas, no lion has ever been beloved, or granted an affectionate nickname. They are objects of terror.

1st World distortion? Say it ain't so. I guess it's easier to love something that you'll only ever see on TV or behind 3" of tempered glass.

I think part of the hype is some networks were trying to avoid the Planned Parenthood videos.
