I was wondering if there was a way to trash the system folder for it. I get a message saying the system needs it, but it is just sitting there, taking up room on my HD. I'm running 10.4.9.
Any thoughts?

Just drag it to the trash. If it won't let you, make sure you're doing it as an administrator account. If it still won't let you, change permissions on it (as an administrator), then drag it to the trash.
If all else fails, you can go into the terminal, then as an administrator, type the relevant rm command (or sudo rm command) to delete the folder and its content. These kind of commands are potentially very dangerous, this one in particular, because if you accidentally hit ENTER at the wrong time, you could easily delete your entire Mac OS X System directory. In fact this one is so dangerous, and so easy to get wrong, if you're not experienced, that I would not type it here because I don't want to be blamed for you trashing your entire Mac system.

In System Preferences, Classic, is anything checked? If so, uncheck. You may need to restart after doing this.

Changing the permissions doesn't seem to have worked. There are no boxes checked in the System Preferences. I am the administrator and seem to be unable to trash the thing. Very odd.
Ah. Well I can't kill the enclosing folder, but I trashed everything within it. Strange. But at least it is mostly gone. Thanks guys.

Try moving the Finder and System files into 2 separate folders. Do a restart and then trash it.

You have to empty the folder first, restart, then trash the folder. Works everytime.

exactly. and if you log out, then log back in, you can delete the folder itself (after the above tip).
don't forget the desktop os9 and apps os9 folders & files.
(i've even deleted the classic system preference)

To verify: We're talking about the "System Folder" folder used by Mac OS 9 (Classic); not the "System" folder, which is used by Mac OS X.

Somehow I think he would have noticed something was awry if he had trashed the contents of /System…

That would be a safe assumption since the title of this thread is "Since I no longer use OS9..."
I never checked but how much space would you save by removing OS9? (not including apps since that will vary...)

Doesn't save a lot of space, but since the HD that I have my system running off of (the one that came with the G4) is only around 21 GB every little bit helps.
And thanks again for all of your help.

If I'm not mistaken, you don't need the backslash when using quotes.

But think of how much space you could save if you deleted both!
