I"m running a basic fileserver here in the office, it's a pretty simple setup. There are only three users. 30GB drive for the startup disk, which only contains the OS. 2x 80GB RAID for the actual data, and an external 120GB Firewire drive for backup.
The OS is reporting that the startup disk is full (0 bytes free), even after deleting several unneccessary Apps (iChat, Image capture, etc.) ... i fixed permissions on the disk, no changes. i ran omni disk sweeper and it totaled only 2.8 GB in files. i ran disk warrior and it seemed to think the drive was fine, with a few directory chagnes here and there. interestingly, it reported 30 GB available, which is odd considering it's a 30 GB disk.
fortunately, the file-serving aspect works fine since those files live on a drive that is functioning normally, but printer sharing etc. doens't work since there's no space on the OS drive.
i'm totally puzzled by this. does anyone have any ideas of what i could try?

I hope it's really 30 GB and not 3, because then it would make perfectly sense that you run low on space.
Try to figure out where the space goes. - See the root folder of your startup disk in the Finder with "show all sizes" on in lit view
- Use TinkerTool to turn the visibility of invisible files in the Finder on.
- Try in the terminal commands like "sudo du -h -d 1 -x /" to see the size (=disk usage, du) of files and folders.

My server gets this sometimes,
check your /var/spool/cups/tmp directory in the hidden folder /Private I've found there seems to be a bug in cups that doesn't make it clean up after itself and the startup disk becomes very full, very fast.
If it's the case it will continue to happen at least till u reboot. You might want to create a cron script or something to empty that folder nightly.

holy crap, that's a lot of megabyte-sized files. i wonder why omni disk sweeper didn't see this directory? i guess because of its ultra hidden secret nature. anyway, thanks, that seems to have fixed the problem.
would this be the correct crontask?
@daily rm -f /var/spool/cups/tmp/*
