Computers, burglar alarm systems, gas and electricity meters, iPods, telephone exchanges – all are considered food by the flea-sized ants, for reasons that have left scientists baffled.

They eat fire ants, so they are not without a good side. But they have pretty well established themselves in the Houston area, so it'll take a lot to even control them.

On the other hand, a LOT of different types of ants are attracted to electrical equipment for some reason. Back in '86 I found out that certain ants in the Austin area liked the electrical cables and components in a public address system cabinet mounted outside. And in the next one, the next, and the next. No clue why...and these were NOT the 1/8" long tiny things that you've just read about-they were typical small red ants.

We don't have very many aggressive ants in California. We do have a few "fire ants" species. They'd swarm someplace and make a huge "pile" of ants. As kids, we'd dare each other to run through the fire ants. Hurt like hell. Luckily none of were allergic.

(I just reached Clinically Insane with that post.)

About 10 years ago I had a Zelda craving, I grabbed my (translucent) Game Boy Color and the thing was infested with countless ants. Even more ant carcasses.

Not a single ant anywhere else nearby.

To be honest, it was one of the most bizarre things that has ever happened to me.

I haven't seen this type of ant, but I'm well north of Houston proper. Still, if/when they make it here, there will be plenty of fire ants for them to dine on. Speaking of which, I have seen fire ants collect in electrical sockets outdoors — I don't know what the attraction is.

One thing is for certain, there is no stopping them; the ants will soon be here.
And I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords.
I'd like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

The ants – also known as paratrenicha species near pubens – have so far spread to five counties in the Houston area.
Near what??? Are they related to crabs or something?

Same thing happened to me this winter.. I was cleaning/fixing some telephones and as I opened the display part of a Vista, a bunchload of ants corpses fell onto my lap.. Very disgusting!!
