I just did a restore of my system from a dmg, onto a clean partition.

Everything works great, but it looks like it created some extra directories in the root folder that were not there (or not visible) before: "etc", "tmp" and "var". Anyone know anything about this?

If I remove them, I am unable to login to the system.

They are not visible but they are there to stay

If you want to 'see' them, open Terminal and type:

cd ..

and press intro/return

do it again

cd ..

and press intro/return

now type

ls

and press intro/return

now you must be located at the hard disk root level and a list of invisible files would bw shown… "etc", "tmp", "var", "sbin"… are there.

Every time you type "cd .." and press intro/return you can also type "pwd" -short for Print Working Directory-, that is going to tell you where (what level into your hard disk) you are located, once the command 'pwd' returns a slash '/' you are at the level where are placed those directories you asked about…

Thanks...but I DON'T want to see them!

I guess they lost their invisible status when I restored the files.

Just use a utility such as XRay (check MacUpdate) to set the Invisible flag on the files, and you should be all set.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
