What's your take on repairing permissions?

Yeah, I've seen them. Pretty interesting, actually. The only time I repair permissions is when I let Carbon Copy Cloner do it before backing-up, which is about once a month.

It's a waste of time unless you use a third party installer that recklessly goes around altering permissions (e.g. Adobe Flash Player).

There are problems it solves, but they've become increasingly rare as companies get used to permissions on OS X.

SuperDuper does it for me about once per week. I rarely do it any other time.

Many servers (such as Windows) do a nightly "re-apply" of permissions to help secure the system from security holes made by bad software or hacks. I agree that this is important but as far as it having some kind of fix for regular enduser issues I do not... given that the enduser is not altering system settings and programs they shouldn't be. every time I see somebody telling someone they need to repair permissions to fix an issue it raises my eyebrow.

C'mon, now.
Something had to replace "Rebuild the desktop" in the Macintouch lexicon.

I've never consciously run it... although I'm sure some installation routines have done it without me knowing.
