Macbooks can run any PC OS, so yeah, you want the PC version.

Hold down the option key as you are booting. You should see a boot menu, including the Ubuntu CD (it might be labeled "Windows")

Holding down the C key tells it to boot from CD.
Does the CD work on a PC? The next option is it's a bad CD.
Oh, make sure you hold down the C key immediately after you turn the machine on.

Did you burn the image correctly? You don't burn the image as a file onto the CD, you use Disk Utility to burn the image onto the CD, and it *should* work. Googling "burn cd image mac" should return many helpful results, or even browsing the Ubuntu forums would work too.

If tgis is any help, the guys who make Ubuntu will ship you a printed-out (not-burned) CD of Ubuntu if you want them to. It takes a while to show up, but you won't have to worry about a disc not being burned properly.
I was looking for a thread like this because i was trying to run Auditor. I heard people had gotten Ubuntu to work, but not completely without problems in every case. I would like to hear if this works well for you.
goMac, were there any problems running Ubuntu at all? Auditor did not work right for me. It booted in a safe mode. the touchpad and keyboard didn't work, or it was frozen, take your pick.

Get Parallels, it is well worth it. No hassle installing it, no partitioning etc. I am running Ubuntu in Parallels and it works like a charm…

You oughta go to the Ubuntu forums where they have a Mac section. Plenty of Ubuntu experts in there...

If you really want us to be productive in helping, you are going to have to do your part and provide far more information than you have thus far.
Do you want our help?

You're not going to get much help here. I haven't used a Macintel so I can't help you with your AirPort connection as I believe it uses a different chipset from the PPC models.
Go to Ubuntu forums and post your question in the Dapper PPC subforum.

Let's start with all the details of your network setup-router, base station/access point, all their settings, your AirPort settings (in OS X AND in Ubuntu), etc... Lots of variables here, so tell us everything. There's something odd going on, but with so many proverbial moving parts, we need to know what's doing what before we can say what's not doing its job.

When you set it up, did you set up the Ubuntu machine to "connect via DSL" or to "connect via a LAN"? It's quite possible that you have the router handling the PPPoE connection and Ubuntu's trying to do that as well. That will not work.

Ubuntu doesn't work with Airport Extreme cards without a lot of haxx0ring, last I checked. The company hasn't released any Linux drivers.

My advice - don't bother. I installed Ubuntu under Parallels, and it's like, meh. Why do you want to replace the Mac OS with an inferior OS ?

It depends on what you'd want to use it for. If you want to learn how to run a server, it would be OS X Server that would be inferior.

I played with Ubuntu about a year ago and it seemed like a slower version of OS X. A lot of the common programs look almost the same as Apple's and a lot of the software I used in Uuntu (Openoffice, Firefox, etx.) were available in OS X either natively or via X11. I thought Ubuntu was very nice but redundant for most who already have OS X (and a machine capable of running it smoothly). Ubuntu also ran much slower than OS X on the same hardware (I used version 5 and 6 of Ubuntu).

No argument, Ubuntu is a good way to learn Linux. That doesn't mean Linux is a superior operating system for day-to-day use. It's great for servers that you hope to leave running in a dark room with no supervision, not so much for actually doing stuff.

Well, we've all assumed that this person is wanting to use Ubuntu for day-to-day use. Maybe this isn't the case?

Perhaps, but if he's looking for a server, a MacBook is a pretty bizarre choice.

Nevrmind as i can see this is going to be too confusing for me for one and its not going to be used for a server. I was just looking to be playing around with it. I'll just stick with learnin the ins and outs of osx (im knda new to mac)

I can't seem, for the life of me to get Auditor to work. I fond an app called KisMac and it works for what I would have used Auditor for anyway. On a side note, Knoppix and Fedora Core LiveCDs work. Next, I want to try Ubuntu (in the mail) and DamnSmallLinux. I also want to try to get a preinstalled envirnment of Windows to work. I also want to see if DSL will work from USB. There are reports of people getting OSX to boot from USB, but I haven't been able to turn up anything on DSL.
