My local ISP recommended this over apple airport based on it being significantly cheaper with good performance. The tech is an apple user. Any reason to avoid the Lynksis? Otherwise it looks like a good deal.

thanks

I have used a number of LinkSys routers and have been happy with them.
They are the only ones so far that I have been able to actually repeat their signal so they can be configured with other ones for a huge space.

The tech support is the typical non-english speaking/comprehending at least 80% of the time.

Considering that you can get them for 1/2 or less than competing Apple stuff,it makes sense to me.

Not only that. Tell them you're on a Mac and they'll tell you your system is "not supported" and refuse to engage you any further.

Of course this is inconsistent. When I had a problem, the first guy I got on the phone was very helpful, until my lame cell signal cut us off. Upon calling back, not only was I not able to speak to the guy who was already helping me and knew what was goin' on... The second guy said Macs aren't supported.

My Linksys stuff works great (now), but when it's time to replace it/upgrade, I'll be going elsewhere. F 'em!

There's darn little that you should need to call tech support for with a Linksys device. The biggest challenge is to translate the Apple terminology to industry standard terminology-and you can do that right here. Just read the manual and configure the router yourself, and there won't be any problems.

Note that these routers use your browser to access an internal configuration web page, so you may see some Java scripting issues using Safari, but Internet Explorer should work fine.

My home network uses a Linksys access point (I already had a router when we went wireless), and there is zero problem using AirPort Extreme with it.

I have yet to come across a linksys router that worked properly. I went through 6, plus i've had countless customers who have all had networking problems that were traced back to their linksys.

I use Netgear routers and they work great. Apple's routers are more expensive, but you get some damn neat toys with them. Like an audio output, and a USB Printer port that you can use a hub on and hook up a bunch of printers. They are more expensive because they give you more. Plus the quailty is higher. All the sub $100 routers seem to die young compared to Apple's.

Netgear B $20
Netgear G $40
AirPort Express $125
Linksys G $65

There seems to be quite a bit of knowledge in this particular thread so I will pose the following question:
I just replaced my router and hub (hub used because router did not have enough ports) with a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G). After hooking everything up, the Internet works flawlessly but my Print Server is not able to be "seen" by any of the three computers on the network (it was before the change in the config). Please note that I am not using the router in a wireless fashion yet as I am waiting for the notebook cards to come in. The three computers and the print server are all connected in the back of the wireless router. The other port is being used for my Cable Modem input.
FYI- The print server is a Linksys as well (non-wireless).
Any ideas for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

BTW- I had the same experience with Linksys as far as their less than helpful tech support.

Is the print server on the same subnet as the router and your computers?

Sorry. I should have posted earlier. I had a bad patch panel. Switched panel and "voila", it worked like a charm.
Oh well.
Thanks.
