And then one morning you wake up and see his picture on the front page of the paper, not because he robbed a bank or went postal, but because he had a documentary made about him that won the Grand Jury Prize: Documentary at Sundance. So, if you get a chance, go see "God Grew Tired Of Us". He really is a pretty amazing dude and all around good guy.

Another Central New Yorker (although transplanted by unfortunate circumstances) does good. We are proud of him and his desires to help his native land.

Where are you in central New York?

I grew up in and around Ithaca and western New York before moving to Albany when I was six. Lived there for 12 years, got the heck out and have only been back for weddings or funerals.

I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

... But you wouldn't want to live there

I have a camp just north of Pulaski on the Salmon River Reservoir. Gorgeous up there, as long as you don't mind the hillbillies.

Anyway, back to John and to give you a little bit of his story, as well as showcase why people would want to make documentaries about him instead of me, I give you the following true narrative of how I found out John's story when he first came to work for us. This came about because I needed a night off for a hockey game:

Me: I need tomorrow night off

The Boss: Can't, already two guys off (we can only have two off per shift)

Me: *Looks at ETO board* Tell John too bad, he's new, I have seniority.

Boss: *Looks at me like I'm made of equal parts assholes and abortions* His mother and sister are flying in from Africa. CBS News is going to have a crew there for the story.

Me: Can't they take a taxi?

Boss: Are you ****ing retarded or just completely heartless?

Me: Could go either way. Why?

Boss: Because when he was a kid his entire village was massacred. John was told his whole family was butchered. He fled to Kenya. About a year ago, he finds out that his family survived, and that his mother and fourteen year old sister are at a refugee camp in Uganda. He's saved every penny he's earned to bring them over here. He hasn't seen his mother in 15 years and he's never even met his sister.

Me: Oh

Me: So can I have the night off or what?

Boss: Get away from me you mouth-breather

Big John

John is the ridiculously tall dude in the back. He's 6'11", which makes him ideally suited for scaring the ever living jebus out of our resident psychotics and crackheads.

And he got pretty embarrassed tonight when I pointed out to him he's listed on IMDB.

If anyone would be interested in donating to his clinic project, or even you might want to learn a bit more about it or follow the progress, I found this blogspot blog when I was looking for a picture. Check it out.
