Basically, I'd like a domain name with .com but the one I really want is taken (and the person that does nothing with the site wants a ridiculous amount for it) but yet, the .net variation is available.

Here's my background: the site will be for me to market myself as a web designer/developer, as well as a Mac consultant. Would I benefit from a .com domain, or should I just go with the .net. I will be running this out of my home office. Hmm...that's all I can think of for now that may be of help. Thanks in advance!

It doesn't make much difference to me.

I'd go with a .com name myself. It just has that ring about it, you know?

Hmm. I could always put the word "the" in front of it and get the .com that way.

Or you could just misspell it. That seems to be the cool thing on the Web these days (Google, Flickr, etc.).

Since your unwilling to pay the fee (and I don't knock you on that), I'd go with the .net alternative or come up with a variation that has a .com available.

Darren over at ProBlogger.Net had .net for a while and still had tons of people. He recently was able to buy .Com but traffic is directed at his .net site.

I think it's no longer about the name or the .net vs. .com but how well you're able to market yourself and your site. Good luck.

This is absolutely true. Most people will come to your site through links, Google or bookmarks anyway. You just have to get people linking, Googling and bookmarking you. The difference made by .net versus .com is minuscule in the big picture.
