iOS 10 installed on My iPad Air and 6S plus. No more slide to unlock, now you press home. Messages will take a bit of relearning.

You can now use your finger to write. Unless I missed it in the last version, animated GIFs. Initiate face or calls time from messages. I think I saw something like quick emojis when I received an iMessage from the neighbor. I opened Words with Friends and there is an in game message that says I can play within Messages.

Messages is the biggest change in iOS10, I think. There are even Messages apps now - as in, run inside messages.

Quick emojis are that if you type a word that could be an emoji, you can press it to switch to that emoji.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I kind of miss slide-to-unlock. Clicking the home button feels odd, especially since the screen still slides to the side in order to enter the passcode.

I thought this was a great review of the new OS. iOS 10 reviewed: There’s no reason not to update | Ars Technica I've found the message app a fantastic upgrade in usability.

You can turn off the requirement for click-to-unlock.

One other thing...the new locking "click" sound is barely audible. I have a Smart Cover on my iPad and, in the past, when I closed the cover, there was a very audible, purposeful "KA-CLICK!" as the pad locked. There was no doubt that it's locked. In iOS 10, it's more like a long pause and then a teeny, tiny "klik." You almost have to lean in and listen hard to make sure it locked.

To my ears, it went from a lock clicking to a door closing.

Putting iPhone on vibrate now only makes two quick, muted vibrations.
It's less noticible, and makes me double check every time if I did it right.

Ugh. Not great.

I'm still holding off for my Air2, my wife's Mini2, and both of our iPhone 5s's. I've read about iOS 10 "soft bricking" devices, and I feel like hanging back for a bit to let things settle down.

And frankly, I just finished updating to iOS 9.3.5, and it was a hassle. I couldn't update either my iPhone or my iPad while connected to my iMac because the download was g l a c i a l l y slow on a 20+Mbps connection that was plenty snappy (TM) with everything else, even while these downloads crawled. I wound up having both devices download the update over the air, and (after backing them both up on the iMac) I updated using the download on the devices. I have NO idea what caused all of that, but I'm feeling less adventurous and more cautious about iOS at the moment...

The "soft bricking" issue was fixed within hours.

Updating through iTunes from a computer never caused a problem.

Is Safari on an iPhone not panning for people when typing in a text field?

Like, say, when typing a post on this very forum?

I assume both, but I'm noticing the horizontal. I can just type right off the screen.

Also, when I tap the "Quick Reply" field, the screen zooms in on the center of the field, which means the cursor is off the left edge.

Reboot didn't fix it.

Is not going back to the letters after you type a comma intentional, or a bug?

Decided to go for the update on my Mini 2.

It's a little janky, but acceptable for the use case, which is "car computer" (mostly Waze).

Is there a "mark all as read" function for Mail?

I used to do it by powering through with the "next mail" arrow, but on 10 you need to stay on individual mails for a second or two before they register as read.

That's irritating to do for 50 emails.

And since I'm on the mail subject, if you've responded to an email, is there a quick way to access that response?

Am I the only one who preferred the old lock screen font? It had finesse.

The new font looks like they said "**** it, Steve's not looking... put a stroke on the old one and call it a day".

That's good to hear. As usual, the "bad issue" got more press than the "it's fixed". I will plan to update sometime soon.

Still on 9, but there you can push the Edit button (top right corner in the malbox view) and then "Mark All" among the buttons that come up. That gives you the option to mark all as read.

On my iPad, I've been noticing that the landscape/portrait orientation software is now super-insanely touchy. I'll be holding my pad in, say, landscape mode, typing away and the pad might dip a micron to the right or left and suddenly the display rotates to portrait. It's really #^%*&# annoying.

And, I still want slide-to-unlock back. That's gonna be on my gravestone, if they don't make it, at the very least, an option for non-touch-ID iThings.

So no one has the Safari problem where the screen won't follow the cursor when typing into a text field?

Are you talking about a text field not scrolling up as you type, so whatever you're typing ends up hidden behind the keyboard? If so, that's always been a "feature" for as long as I've had an iThing. Hell, iOS does it in it's own apps like when you're writing a review in AppStore. It's freaking irritating as hell.

Way worse. The screen isn't following the cursor at all.

This is what my screen looked like as I typed the above.

Just updated to 0.2. Testing right now if the two big bugs are fixed, the keyboard not changing back to letters, and Safari not tracking the cursor.

Aaaaand, they're still there.

A more serious answer.

I'm guessing no longer having to build the Touch ID sensor into a button helped, but my experience so far with the iPhone 7 Touch ID is Apple ****ing nailed it. The computational lag is below the threshold of perception, and it's worked every single time, even with the things that used to throw it, like wet or sweaty fingers.

At some point this will be the norm. The slide to unlock screen doesn't need to exist in this world. It's typical Apple to start nudging things in the direction they see things happening before most of their users are ready for it.

I guess this is iPhone 7 talk, but this thread is the only one where I raved about how good the Touch ID was. Today, it started acting up with a sweaty thumb.

This behavior has been pretty consistent for me with every generation of Touch ID. After a couple weeks the performance starts to slide.

Touch ID never worked reliably on my wife's IP6. It seemed like she had to re-train it every week. She went right back to the old way pretty quickly. It would have to be a quantum improvement in the 7 for her to trust it.

My experience:

5s: typical 1.0 release. Flashy, but serious reliability issues.
6: basic functionality achieved. Still has reliability issues with moisture, but works in general. It's moisture sensitivity is such I can usually guess when it's going to act up, and just skip to swipe and PIN.
6s: minimal improvements to reliability, though somewhat faster.
7: seems to have more or less nailed it. Blazing fast. Over two weeks of constant use, I've had effectively* two misfires. One was with the phone covered in enough rain the screen wasn't registering input properly either. One was with a sweaty thumb.

So far that's in the one misfire for every 1,000+ uses range. Well beyond acceptable.

If I didn't happen to get a better sensor than normal for some reason, and the reliability holds out, not only would I unhesitatingly recommend its use, if the person was the typical "I don't want to bother" normie, I'd insist.

*I say "effectively" because in both situations I tried the Touch ID more than once before giving up.

The sensor in my 5s is essentially perfect for me. It misfires less than once a week. The one in my iPad Pro is more or less identical, although admittedly I use it far less.

I don't think my 5s has managed to misfire much at all. I have, however, determined that some off-white vinyl gloves work with Touch ID, but none of the blue, nitrile gloves do. They all seem to work with the screen though...

I sweat like an MFer, which has made all my Touch IDs unhappy with me until the one on the 7.

My iPad Pro (mongo size) has 6s reliability, but 5s speed. Relatively speaking, it feels dog slow.
