It takes a tremendous amount of effort to

Using Kodawarisan's disassembly of the PowerBook G4 12-inch as a guide, I managed to thoroughly mangle the keyboard on my PowerBook G4/1GHz 12-inch DVI.

There's a bracket-like piece under the 5 and 4 keys -- under, but not accessible from. You can see it in the Kodawarisan photos (highlighted here):

Turns out there's a 14mm screw that has to be removed from the memory bay to release our friend the keyboard.

{Frickin'-frackin'-curse-words}

In case anyone's curious, a replacement keyboard will run you, oh, about $175.

xerbase,
you can carefully bend the keyboard back, just work it very slowly and carefully - its do-able.

I wouldn't recommend not fiddling with the internals to anyone. Where I erred was in not having all the facts. But there's no reason to be "scared" of opening that puppy up and seeing what makes it tick. Unless you're unwilling to pay for a part replacement or two along the way. ;-)

Seriously though, if you've got the right tools and the right information (that service manual is the cat's pajamas), it's hard to go wrong.

When I was living through the whole iBook logic board replacement fiasco last year, I read every warranty document I could find, and didn't find anything that said I void my warranty by opening the case. Glad to be proved wrong on that if someone can find it in either AppleCare or product warranty docs, but I never found it.

So, right tool, right info -- dig right in! :-)

lol, ok, but its hard to get hold of those instruments over here around where i lve at the moment, i dont think i would have much of a problem opening it up etc...but all those screws....soooooooo many, i think i would at least loose 2 of them or more, then i would be stuffed!
