I would appreciate some recommendations to update and expand my current library of CD's. This is for my newly updated audio/video system at home. itunes quality is out, at least until a lossless format is available, so I am only interested in full length CD's.

Most of what I have now is 70's or 80's stuff like Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac. The only things I don't like much are country and rap. I do occasionally listen to harder rock.

Cave-In - Perfect Pitch Black

Cave in used to be a death-metal band, then they changed to a polished yet wussy sound, and finally (with the album listed above) they found how to sound polished and rock out hard.

Half the vocals are screaming, and the other half (sung by the same guy mind you) is grandiose almost operatic lyrics.

Maybe not your cup of tea, but I give it a

(Also anything by The Mars Volta is endorsed by me.....but greg is going to chastise me about it )

I appreciate all the tips so far. My collection so far has plenty of older stuff. I think I have about 200 CD's. Some of it, heck much if it is junk. When I bought one of the very first CD players years ago I got a copy of Lionel Richey to go with it. I swear, I only played it once!

I am not much into the hard rock screaming vocals. Although my Son does! I am looking for vocals and instrumentals that where the the detail can be heard through a good set of speakers and a good amp. I have Norah Jones on my shortlist.

I found an example of this on the web. Sounds like a great recommendation, even if I was only able to preview it on my ibook. Thanks.

The Mars Volta.

Although at times it may seem that he's "screaming" but I kid you not - Cedric Bixler-Zavala has one of the most amazing voices you will ever hear.

I recommend De-Loused in the Comatorium or Frances The Mute. I (surprisingly) listen to both albums, non-stop without skipping any songs (which I have a bad habit of doing).

Deloused is a little to manic for his tastes, I think.

Frances the Mute is pure genius in my opinion and I haven't heard a band incorporate psychedelic rock, hard rock, latin, and jazz in such a way before.

Excellent.

In that case, a few more recommendations you might like...

Blind Guardian (the newer albums seem more your style, like A Night at the Opera, Nightfall in Middle Earth, etc).

Nevermore - Dreaming Neon Black (as a starter, then perhaps The Politics of Ecstasy, Dead Heart in a Dead World, and This Godless Endeavour).

Symphony X - the rest. (try The Divine Wings of Tragedy after V, as The Odyssey and Paradise Lost might be a little heavy for you, and the earlier albums may not sit quite as well either - though I definitely recommend all of them).

So many to list, but I won't overload you.

I quite like Kamelot, though nowhere near as much as Symphony X for example. I don't listen to them very much, but that's just because I find their music a little repetitive-sounding (but that's just their style).

Not to detract from them though, Kamelot have some really great songs, and I'm a huge fan of Epica.

You'd probably like Nightwish too, very similar styles.

Yeah, I do like Nightwish. Well, the older stuff anyway, a lot of the newer stuff lost it I think.

I tend to go through phases where I listen to a few different bands a *lot* and others tend to get neglected. At the moment I'm on a huge Nevermore, Brainstorm, BG, Symphony X, Edguy kick.

Pretty much all I listen to is power metal/prog rock, really.

At the Drive In spawned two separate bands: Sparta & The Mars Volta

They're great - don't get me wrong. I just think they're a little too "hard" for what he's looking for. Mars Volta is a little more refined, imo. And now that I think of it....Frances the Mute is probably the better album.

You chaps into Kamelot should check Elvenking. They're like the power metal version of what Blackmore's doing with the pixies at the bottom of his garden.

And possibly Rhapsody Of Fire. Heck, those guys even manage to get Scaramanga singing with 'em.

Based on his listed music, I get the feeling that the OP will not like any of these bands.

Yeah, Christopher Lee has a great voice. He's lip-syncing on that one video, but he did lay down the original track.
