Is there a way of saving a Real Audio file so that you can listen to it
without having to be 'online'?

Thanks beforehand for any information with this question.

The whole setup of RealAudio is designed so that you *can't* store it on your disk, and is one of the reasons why certain sites prefer it over QuickTime, which does let you save files locally.

However, there is one trick that can sort of work, at least for audio files (doesn't work for RealVideo). You can hook your headphone jack on the back of your computer to your sound in port. Start the audio stream and then start some application capable of capturing and recording sound input. As RealPlayer plays the sound, the recording software captures it to disk.

Jasmine and Authentic Sound Recorderare a couple of nice audio recorder that might work well for you.

Thanks Camelot.

Now I have another question, and please just attribute it to inexperience. What kind of cable/plug would I need to do this? Something that I can get at Radio Shack? I have a G3 Powerbook. Again thanks, and I do think it would be worth the try.

Choose "download to disk" instead of clicking the link.

Choosing 'Download to Disk' will download a small (<200 byte) .ram file containing the URL of the RealAudio file. It won't contain any audio data at all.

You can use regular 3.5mm stereo jacks available at any Radio Shack or similar.

Your PowerBook does have a PlainTalk input jack, which supports line-level input for higher-quality audio. Check Apple's TIL for more details.

The URL in the .ram file is the location of the original RealAudio file, download the file in the URL of the ram file.

There used to be software to do that, but because it violated many copyright laws, and infringed on Real's format, they got sued. Thankfully, the software is no longer availible.
