I was running a search on a member's posts(using the "Search: All posts by this registered user." in the profile) and noticed something interesting

As the search was running, where it says "About to search", I noticed the titles of some forums that I'd never seen: "Seti@Home" and "Linux on Mac".

Interesting, hmmm

wlonh,

thanks.

I guess the SETI@Home forum is a participants-only forum.

And I hope the Linux-on-Mac opens soon. I'm curious.

hey wlonh,

You should update the SETI@Home client link on the MacNN SETI page. I was playing with version 2.03 for about an hour before I found out there was a version 2.04.

btw, I'm about a quarter of the way thru my first W/U

we know that... the consensus was that 2.03 was the one to put up at the time, it will be changed soon, as Misha and Mark have determined

I know that you know. After all, I found out about 2.04 from your SETI thread. But I didn't know before, but now I know.

I did some deliberate searches of the Moderators/Private forum. Searches for "Dumb", "Idiot", "Jerk", and "Stupid" did not have a single hit.

What is the point of a private forum if you don't take advantage of it to talk about us?

I reckon they must use some super-secret code to talk to each other, just to thwart attempts like that...
example:

Wlonh: Isn't that Dragonlance a great fellow?
Oscar: Absolutely. One of the most valuable members of the MacNN community for sure...

Now I'm sure you don't need me to translate that. Or it could be more than that - take this next example:

Wlonh:sd654f6sd14f3d5sf6d65sd5fh54ewrd5fs4**j uhadhkajsfi**dhkjaL*Ӭ*hdfkajdshfL*** *
Oscar:ksdj3la3ekraaolkwlje3lwasd**!

Anyway you get the idea - and to all moderators/admins, we're onto you!

I seriously doubt they communicate this way. It's time consuming. Maybe that's why there aren't many posts in that forum.

Actually its not that time consuming - I thought it would be but not so - type the message normally, then read it backwards and type the backwards version as you read. I can do that almost as fast as I can type normally... Of course it doesn't feel natural which makes it slower - when typing normally you can do it totally without thinking. Hell, when someone asks me to say the alphabet I start with 'Q'...

It was REALLY easy for me. I just used Tex-Edit Plus and an applescript called Reverser from the Official AppleScripts for TE+ Archives.

Here's one that I wrote for ROT13 (at least it's how I think ROT13 works?).

Code:
tell application "Tex-Edit Plus" if exists window 1 then set z to contents of window 1 set z to my doROT13(z) set contents of window 1 to z set z to {} else beep display dialog ("" & return & "Error!" & return & "Could not detect an open document window!" & return & "Please try again.") buttons {"Ooops!"} default button 1 giving up after 30 end if end tell on doROT13(z) set za to {} set z to z's items repeat with x in z set a to ASCII number x if (a > 64 and a < 78) or (a > 96 and a < 110) then set a to a + 13 else if (a > 77 and a < 91) or (a > 109 and a < 123) then set a to a - 13 end if set end of za to ASCII character a end repeat return za as string end doROT13
Basically, it just rotates a character by 13 (e.g. a->n). Here's a block of text modified with ROT13:

Vs lbh pna ernq guvf, lbh'er fgnaqvat gbb pybfr! Abj V'z jbexvat ba bar gb zbqvsl grkg nppbeqvat gb qvfrpgnznp'f fcrpf nobir (whfg sbe sha).

And you thought I was really smart

`pqnh$w{sm|+

That says Apple rules!

Done with an algorithm I wrote and put into a HyperCard program.
Nice text encrypter. I use it for e-mails.
If you would like a copy, you know what to do.
