What do you mean by a start up disk? Is it a "Disk Tools" boot floppy disk or a CD of Mac OS 7.6.1?

BTW, OS 7.5.3 is available in its entirety for free. I believe it is on Apple's SW updates site, I know it was on the MacAddict CD a while back. This would be a good substitute in the meantime, at least. Of course, I'm partial to 7.6.1 myself

Haywood is a friend of mine and is new to the computer workd - what she was asking for was a CD of 7.6. Because she is running such an old computer, she needs to use an older system and is set up with 7.6. She called Apple and they want $120 for a CD. I suggested she try the forum to see if anyone had the disk and wasn't using it, wanted to sell it at a reasonable rate. She doesn't have a syquest, but does nave a 250 MB. Does anyone know if we can simply copy my 7.6 disk to the zip - and if so, how can we then start from the zip disk we created. (this was our original plan, but we couldn't get the computer to start from the zip, expecially if the system on the hard drive was corrrupt as it wouldn't recognize the zip..)

Yes, you can just copy the system files onto a Zip and start up that way. The important part is to have the System Folder in the root level of the Zip, and make sure it is set up just like the System Folder on the hard drive you're copying from. The computer should start up fine from the Zip if you have it like that. Obviously you need to have the zip in and the drive on and connected when it starts up. It doesn't matter about the internal HD for starting up from another disk, because the boot ROM just looks for a valid Sys Folder in any connected disk's root level. Good luck!
