No.

I want to know why Gandalf had a staff instead of a wand. What's the difference?

Gandalf is a Maia, not a wizard. ‘Wizards’ as such don’t really exist in Tolkien’s universe (even if the Istari are usually called wizards in the books).

It is a bit paradoxic, though, that Gandalf (whose name means ‘Wand-elf’) didn’t have a wand.

They're both made of wood. A staff could simply just be a large wand. I don't see any reason why a character in the Harry Potter books couldn't have a staff.

The wand can do nothing on its own. It needs the right witch or wizard to complete it, and to create magic. A wand will not work properly if used by the wrong witch or wizard; it would be even worse if the ‘user’ were another wand.

It also wouldn't work if you tried to control another wand made from the same source because of Priori Incantatem.

Wouldn’t that only apply if you’re using the wands against each other?

Besides, we don’t even know if it would be possible to control one wand with another to begin with. It could be it wouldn’t work at all.

Yes, but only as a walking aid due to his extensive injuries. He uses a wand just like everyone else.

Lucius Malfoy carries his wand inside a walking stick in the movies...

I'd take Gandalf over Dumbledore... and not because of the wand/staff issue.

Because of the Michael Gambon/Ian McKellan issue?

I rather like Dumbledore, although his death in the last movie was done really poorly. I hate what David Yates has done to this series.

I haven't seen any LotR movie enough to make a judgment call on Gandalf.

No, I think of them more from the literature than the movies. I think a wizard who can defeat a Balrock could easily take out a wizard who was...

The difference is of course that …

If you’d wanted a reason to pick Gandalf over Dumbledore, you could have just cited Dumbledore’s foolish underestimation of his opponent when dealing with Gaunt’s ring.

One can usually spot telltale signs of mental retardation from facial structure and demeanour (you know, tongue lolling about and what not), but I'm having a hard time spotting the clues with this dude.

Excellent point. I should have thought my statement through before posting.

Also, I don't see how Snape is a second-rate potions master. The entire point of Half-Blood Prince appears to be that Snape is really good with potions.

Yet it is curious that he didn't seem to teach his students the techniques and variations he developed in school... or at least he didn't update the books they used.

That could very well be related to his bitterness at not being allowed to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor for so long.

I definitely wouldn't classify him as second-rate in potions, though - it's obvious he knew what he was doing (and was god at it).
