Uniformed? LOL! How ironic. People stand because the Flag is being raised/presented, the Anthem just marks the occasion. People stand in honor of the people who have died defending this nation, and the symbol of that dedication is the presentation of Flag. Dead soldiers' coffins are draped with them for a reason, loved ones are given those flags afterward for a reason, the fact you're still defending this ignorant punk who doesn't understand why people stand when the Anthem is played and the Flag is presented says a lot... that you didn't understand it either.

Some think they're protesting various bullshit issues when they stay seated, but the reality is that when people don't stand on the presentation of the Flag (again, it's about the presentation of the Flag, not the Anthem) they're ignorantly showing disrespect for all those who have died defending this nation; white, black, brown, Asian, etc..

What the Anthem is doesn't matter, they can change it to whatever they want. Hell, make it Baby Got Back by Sir Mixalot, for all I care, it's played only to draw people's attention to the Flag being displayed and for people to stand and silently reflect on those who have died so they can be free.

There are plenty of times the national anthem is played and the flag is nowhere around. It's not just about the flag. And it's not just about military veterans. Hence why it's called the NATIONAL anthem.

To you and others of a similar mindset what it quite literally says doesn't matter.

"Never mind that the song celebrates the murder of your great-great-grandparents. F*ck their lives! The only thing that matters is the flag."

And that's part and parcel of the problem right there. Not precisely the exact same issue Kaepernick is raising ... but firmly rooted in the same mentality. But hey ... I expected no more and no less of you. In any event, either open a thread in the PWL to debate it further ... or let's just leave it at that to keep this thread on topic.

Nope. There's a flag around, you're just not paying attention (despite the fact you're supposed to face the Flag and place your hand over your heart). Sporting events are a prime example, the flag is escorted by a color guard. Hell, the song itself is about the Flag.

And it's not just about military veterans. Hence why it's called the NATIONAL anthem.
The standing part is about respect to veterans and the flag, not the Anthem.

It doesn't matter, meaning I don't care what the song is, so long as there is one. FFS. It makes no difference in the practical sense. But go ahead and be outraged, it's what you're good at, and it's better than admitting that, like that bonehead Kaepernick, you've been completely wrong (not that it's anything new).

Good grief.

First off the flag is a piece of cloth and the anthem is some noise. Soldiers fought and died not for either of these symbols but to preserve the freedoms of the American citizen, like Kaep, to do or not do whatever he pleases. This flag worship is bizzare.

Secondly, as I have said before, you two arguing for three pages about flags and anthems can happen in the PWL. I really don't like repeating myself, this is a thread to discuss sportsball.

On topic, Teddy Bridgewater just annihilated his knee in a Vikings practice yesterday. Poor Vikings fans.

I can see sitting out/protesting if we were still singing that 3rd verse, but I have never heard that verse in my entire life. OAW, that bit about the killing/fleeing, I took that to mean from the battlefield, not time immemorial. Were there black slaves recruited to fight against the british as well?

If a sportsball person doesn't salute the flag or sing, that's their right, but it doesn't mean everyone has to agree.

We can't edit history of every song/book/art/etc that may have been written by a slave owner, racist, or whatever. That would leave us with probably nothing.

We stand as a sign of respect at the presentation of the Flag, out of acknowledgment of the sacrifices veterans have made and the blood they've spilled. I don't know how to say it any clearer than that. You must be trolling (or gotten especially thickheaded) if you aren't getting it by now.

If some of them choose to forgive him for his asshattery, that's very nice of them and shows a good deal of compassion towards the mentally challenged.

Actually it's hero worship, particularly those who have died for this nation to defend our rights and liberties. So while you do have the right to not stand in respect for what they sacrifice, you should expect others (exercising their own right to freedom of expression) to tell you that you're a d-bag.

Secondly, as I have said before, you two arguing for three pages about flags and anthems can happen in the PWL. I really don't like repeating myself, this is a thread to discuss sportsball.
It's relevant in that it's discussing the especially ignorant actions of a sports figure. If this starts a trend, then that throws shade on a group of people who don't deserve disrespect (people who have died for our freedoms). Hopefully, however, this negative reaction to his idiocy will dissuade others from being prats.

It's a nice deflection of the point coming from a white guy complaining about a peaceful protest.

I'm guessing white people will be satisfied when the protest occurs in such a fashion that no one notices.

They're protesting veterans? Why? Is this like when BLM supporters burn down their own neighborhoods?

I'm guessing white people will be satisfied when the protest occurs in such a fashion that no one notices.
How about simply in a fashion that actually makes sense? It's like blaming paramedics for your house burning down (when it was the firefighters who did a poor job in the first place).

Yeah, that's just you projecting your interpretation of what his protest means.

But seriously, setting guidelines for a protest is oxymoronic.

fun fact, after this was run back for a TD on the ensuing kickoff the Jets' returner fumbled into Julian Edelman's arms for another TD

Not nearly as moronic as protesting the wrong event. (You're reaching now, just admit that some people don't understand why we, as Americans, stand for the Anthem. Geez.)

While people like CTP continue to FETISHIZE the flag some of us are focused on more substantive matters. Like how my own father who is a Navy veteran served a country that embraced white supremacy as a MATTER OF LAW at the time he was on active duty. Funny how the backlash Kaepernick is experiencing from some quarters now is exactly the same as what any African-American ... ATHLETE, activist, or otherwise ... who dared to not stand for a flag that SYMBOLIZED a country that didn't stand for them in REALITY ... faced at the time. The rhetoric is remarkably identical.

In any event, while CTP in his ongoing myopia insists that certain military veterans are merely FORGIVING Kaepernick ... the fact of the matter is that they are actually SUPPORTING him.

Veterans are supporting Colin Kaepernick with social media hashtag - Business Insider

#VeteransForKaepernick trends as military members voice support for QB - CBSSports.com

Colin Kaepernick got support from military veterans everywhere with #VeteransForKaepernick - Mic.com

Now to CTP ... I said it before and I'll say it again. If you wish to debate this issue further then start a thread in the PWL and I'll gladly participate. As far as I'm concerned I've already demonstrated that you really don't have a leg to stand on so I don't feel the need to start one myself. But I'm willing to humor you if you want to go there for the "sport" of it all if nothing else. Or alternatively, you can just make some dismissive comment and keep it moving. I'm quite alright with either as long as this particular thread gets back on track. This is sek929's thread and I'm inclined to respect his wishes on that front. Are you?

Any who...holy crap.

College football season gets shot into full swing this weekend. Can't wait!

And, at the same time, the baseball playoff hunt is unfolding. I personally like the second wild card slot. And now with the roster expansion, those who have some less then stellar records, can see what a possible future may hold (if said team doesn't use this time for finding trading partners for expected talents) with the young kids getting their shot.

The Red Sox have been a roller coaster this year. Amazing offensive production but some of the worst pitching, especially the bullpen, I've ever seen. Ortiz is having one hell of a final year too.

Not even close. I "fetishize" (more like greatly respect) our veterans and appreciate the sacrifices they've made. But go ahead and keep deflecting and misrepresenting my statements (something else you excel at). Neither you nor Kaepernick understand why we stand when the flag is presented, and you're just whining about being caught-out. Get a grip.

Funny how the backlash Kaepernick is experiencing from some quarters now is exactly the same as what any African-American... OMG Racism!™ Someone go get the SJWs on that, they need to mobilize ASAP! Keep deflecting from your ignorance, it's entertaining.

It's more like forbearance for his ignorance, actually, kind of like how I have to deal with you at times.

F Boston. Hahaha. Tigers better take care of business this weekend against the O's and sweep, not enough games left to keep going 5-3 and make it in. Gotta start sweeping a few of these.

Sloppy game; still felt like preseason if it wasn't for the opening ceremonies and the stands being full...but a good watch. Not really a fan of either team (didn't watch much of SB 50). Nice to see Cam speak after and not be too much of a DB. Will he be that way all season? Hopefully.

The NFL opened the season with referees missing a bunch of illegal hits to Cam Newton’s head - SBNation.com

Several dirty hits that weren't called and one that was offset by an intentional grounding penalty. The league has already said they missed throwing the flag on at least one.

Cam is a big guy, hitting him in the helmet is no accident, but it's expected from Denver's violent defense. I can't wait till Talib gouges some more eyes on the field.

Edit: Here's an even better compilation-gif. If that was Peyton Manning I bet CTP would be crying foul today.

^^^ Crying foul? Nope, because I know it's a rough sport. Manning was hurt many times over the course of his career, it happens to all FB players. This is basically over one unflagged questionable hit, that to me looks like the defender leading in with his shoulder. But yeah, rage on buddie. Maybe they should switch to pattycake? That sounds like it's more your speed.

Launches? How many people were ejected? Show me where they were leading in with the crown of the helmet. You see, *I* watched the game, and that's how I know you're full of crap. There was one Roughing call and one no-call that the announcers talked about that could have been a helmet-to-helmet, but they were split about the actual contact. Go cry about the Superbowl again or how Shady Brady somehow got a raw deal, just stop whining about men playing a rough sport, FFS.

Are you serious? Literally the second hit in the gif I posted was Marshall leaving his feet and leading with the crown of his helmet. The NFL already admitted they missed that call. Yet here we have you, as usual, insisting you know more than everyone else.

I also watched the game, every minute in fact, and it was clear as day those were helmet to helmet hits that would have been called with dozens of other QBs. I guess Cam Newton gets a different set of rules applied for him and you're cool with that.

NFL Media reports that the league office considers that play “obviously a missed call.” Marshall lowered his helmet and launched himself directly at Newton’s head. Marshall will certainly be fined.
Please tell me how that wasn't launching or leading with the crown though, since you watched the game and all.

Yet here we have you, as usual, insisting you know more than everyone else.
Prove it. Show us where the NFL officially "admitted it was a missed call". Go ahead.

I also watched the game, every minute in fact, and it was clear as day those were helmet to helmet hits that would have been called with dozens of other QBs. I guess Cam Newton gets a different set of rules applied for him and you're cool with that.
I doubt that, either you're full of it or you're so biased against them that you'll see anything.

Please tell me how that wasn't launching or leading with the crown though, since you watched the game and all.
They led in with the shoulder, but you're deluded, so I'm not sure how you see anything.

Again, stick to pattycake, football is too triggering for you.

Holy crap that was a good game. Larry Fitzgerald has magical hands and this Jeneane Garaffolo lady is a pretty good QB.

I've watched that repeatedly. I have no idea how he was able to do that.

One bad snap. The blown coverage didn't help either.
