I very much like a tip/application which somehow allows me to send windows to the background.
That is, not minimizing or anything, the window should remain in place, it's just that all other overlapping windows should appear on top of it.
Is there such a feature or an application which has such a feature?
I'm an old BeOS user, and I miss the feature from it dearly. It really increased the speed of working with multiple windows.

Not a bad idea. I don't think you can do this in OS X, I'm not aware of any app that does this. You can cycle windows (as you probably know) with command-` and cycle backwards with command-shift-`

Thanks for the tip, but it seems that it's something else on Swedish keyboards.

Yep an applescript should work - and then you can add it to your finder toolbar so you have it there as a icon to click.
(expose would be much faster tho.. i know i know, its not what you want )

I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Try Apple-< and Apple-shift-<, respectively.
Regarding the solution you're looking for, I'm interested in hearing the original problem (from a usability pov). Do the windows generally belong to the same app? Typically, how many windows? What kind of work do you do?

It is, but I can't remember what it is. You can check for yourself in the Full Keyboard Control settings in System Preferences.
