I had to set up all mail mail accounts again.

I used to have only the inbox, the junk box, and the sent box.

Now every account has one, and I have a long list of mailboxes.

On top of it, since gmail went imap, it sends me all the spam I never knew about and established a whole row of mailboxes.

I deleted the account again, and disabled imap, but kept pop enabled.

Now I couldn't send any messages again. Obviously, from the last set-up I have an imap certificate, and you can't go back to pop-only.

How can I get rid of all these mailboxes and go back to only having three (Inbox, Outbox, Junk) ?

With the new imap set-up I get a "message received" signal for every piece of spam.

How do I turn this off?

Log into gmail webmail. In there are IMAP preferences to hide/show certain folders in imap.

Gmail uses labels, not folders.

I clicked on "hide" for everything - it's still all there on my computer. And I can't delete them (imap failure).

I think this is an imap thing.

Can't I go back to using POP alone? When I deleted the gmail account in Mail and tried to set up as POP, I get error messages, as there is an IMAP certificate on my computer (should I erase this one?).

Gmail treats labels like folders when using IMAP.

You need to go into Labs and turn on advanced IMAP controls.

Now return to Labels setup and turn them off.

Also in your app's IMAP setup, ensure that [Gmail] is in the root path option.

Just for the record, your not being able to send messages has nothing to do with whether the account is configured as POP or IMAP.

Is the problem solved? I'm a little unclear as to what the main problem is.

Everything's cozy, besson3c.

Key problem was that Gmail established eight folders on my Mac and downloaded all the spam.

Now, with Cold Warrior's nuclear strike using "turn on advanced imap features" and "hide folders" I only have one more mailbox on the bottom of the Mail column.

It's interesting that such a basic thing as choosing what mail to download and how big a footprint gmail would make on your Mac was an "advanced feature".

Well, in defense of Mail, having mail folders is indeed the norm as far as what IMAP mail is stored.
