Unfortunately, that doesn't alleviate the problem in the least.

Not for me, you just need it for text messaging and dialling a new number. You can still make calls from your phonebook and receive calls without opening it. For me that is 99% of the time.

So, I have two questions:

Did I get that right that the new firmware also supports custom ringtones?
How do I upgrade to the new firmware? Is there definitely no way around that expensive dock?

The firmware old or new should support custom mp3 ringtones. The firmware improved battery life as well, as reduced the lag on the menus. As for updating, sonyericsson on the website was the most accesible way to do it by yourself with the aid of a dss- 20 or 25 sync cradle. I believe the service is no longer accesible. Other than that you would have to take it to a phone reseller who had both the firware and sync station to get it updated.

Ah, ok, thanks.

As for the ringtones: I didn't mean ringtones as such, but I meant ringtones for messages. I guess you still cannot customize them?

*bringing it back to life

Sony Ericsson K750

2 megapixel camera, with autofocus. Black case, 900mAh battery. June-ish release.

Damnit why can't SE make a sexy looking K7xx series phone. If only Motorola made a V3 Razr that had a megapixel+ camera and a totally new UI/address book that didn't suck.

The Z800 and K600 look pretty hot, from sony, as their new 3g (wcdma) handsets.

Look at the bottom of your Contacts list on your K700. Your Mac may display the company name, but the K700 will still go by what's in the First Name / Last Name fields. If nothing is there, it will put a . in front of the Company name and put it at the bottom of the list.

Why bring up such an old thread? There have been more recent threads dealing with this same subject.

So I'm getting my K700i warrantied. The joystick no longer works properly.

I will likely buy a new phone by the end of this year, or early next year. I am waiting for the iTunes phone to see if it's any good. If it's a large smartphone, I'll probably just buy one of the new Sony Ericsson phones (if the camera is any good that is).

I dunno, it is not really doing it for me. It is rather a "safe" update, nothing that exciting to it that makes me want to give up my ultrasexy and reliable black T637.

Sorry to hear that, Eug. I was very happy with my K700i for a while as well. Got it about seven months ago but am now on my seventh (seventh!) one.

I'm going back to Nokia - had one problem with them in ten years. Their phones aren't as full featured but I'll take a phone that works over a phone that's off getting fixed all the time

Hope yours gets sorted!

Yeah, I just got my K700i back and it's working fine now, but in the meantime I've been using my 7 year old (!) Nokia 6190.

But it's nice to have the current features of the K700i again. BTW, I will get the new R2AE033 firmware soon.

R2AE033
- Released on EMMA II (6/12/04)
- Faster overal speed
- Search function disabled in Asian firmware (Far east only?).
- Search function in phonebook upgraded for non-Asian firmware (C doesn't delete Contact, but letters you've entered, cursor cancels search)
- 900 ms+ delay on answering a call before the microphone was switched on has been fixed.
- Display Smileys in MMS/Browser
- Support of Apple ITunes format .m4a (=.mp4) including speech encoding format AAC
- Stopwatch no longer goes into backlight off mode or sleep mode
- Noise in HCA-20 car handsfree is gone
- The signal strength indicator has changed. Now signal is lowered by 1 bar at a time. Signal is raised to 5 bars if a strong signal is detected.
- Various crashes fixed (e.g. when music is playing an an alarm goes off)
- Various Java / Java 3D fixes
- Various browser / WAP / CSS fixes
- Various fixes to the Calendar application
- Various layout / font size fixes
- Updated Camera driver to change the default flicker compensation mode from 50 Hz to automatic.
- JBenchmark1: 2129
- Jbenchmark2: 125
- Software versions:
LCD 200406041
Camera 3.10
ITP CXC 125 813 R1S

Non-DRM'd iTunes songs worked before too, but you had to manually change the name. Now you don't have to do that anymore.

I just bought this phone, Eug-Wanker.

So how do I check what the firmware is to see if it supports the Apple format?

Also, if my firmware is old, where do I download the new firmware and how do I install it?

I have a 12" PB.

"To check firmware on Ericsson phones use this sequence >*<<*<* ( > right joystick/navi button) ( < left joystick/navi button) on the keypad."

I'm not sure if you can do firmware upgrades on the Mac. You need extra hardware anyway. I usually just go to a store with a certified technician to get it done.

BTW, I had to send it a second time. Since the one I got back the second time was a brand new boxed phone (with the latest firmware), I promptly sold it, and went back to a T610.

I am now waiting for something with a better camera and expandable memory. Options, in no particular order:

1) Sony Ericsson W800
2) Motorola iTunes phone
3) Sony Ericsson's replacement for the W800 in 2006

Different firmware, and better accessories (incl. 512 KB flash card and headphone adapter), but yeah, otherwise almost identical.

K750 and Mac:

While waiting for the iPhone, I managed to synchronise the K750, including the calendar!
I tested this method with my Powerbook 15", iSync 2 and Tiger 10.4.1 and it works:
- Do all the system updates availables
- Save the address book and phone contacts
- Download this file: http://www.feisar.plus.com/sync/k750.zip
- Quit iSync, CTRL-click on the iSync icon in the Applications folder
- Choose "Show package content"
- Go to: Contents/PlugIns/ApplePhoneConduit.syncdevice/Contents/
PlugIns/PhoneModelsSync.phoneplugin/Contents/Resources/
- Drag and drop the 2 files from the K750 archive (MetaClasses.plist et SEK750.tiff)
- Download this file: http://www.feisar.plus.com/sync/PhonePlugins.zip
- Drag and drop the "PhonePlugins" folder in the system's Library folder (not the user's one)
- Delete all existing links to the K750i in the Bluetooth preferences
- Reboot the machine
- Go to the Bluetooth menu and select "configure a bluetooth device"
- Make the association
- Launch iSync
- Address book and iCal are now synchronised!

The guy who wrote these scripts is also the author of Sync Now. He really deserves to get something on PayPal!

Let me tell you that this hack is non-official and you may experienced some uncompatibilities or loss of data... but it should work!

You can get the K750i flashed with the W800 firmware. Same orange theme and some ppl say that improved mp3/ audio playback.
