Mac Mini DVD / Blu-Ray Drive Options

I am about to buy annew Mac Mini to replace an old PC desktop. I still need an optical drive for work, so I'm wondering what drive options are out there. I'd love to get a BluRay drive, but will I be able to boot from it?

Generally yes, as long as what you're booting is Mac OS X. Support from booting other OSes from USB is spotty.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I believe that it is possible to hack that to work, but the default installer won't make an install that runs from USB. The Win 7 installer works, though.

I cloned a Win 7 hard drive to a USB 2 hard drive, and it booted up just fine. However, the initial install was on an internal drive.
I've never tried this on a Mac though.

Hmmm… I tried again with a different method. I physically removed my internal drive and put it in an external USB enclosure. It didn't work at all. Windows started to launch but then crashed. Here is my full post on it:
