Ok, I have three options.
PowerMac 7220/200MHz/32meg/1.2gig/Apple 14" monitor - $435
PowerMac 5260/120MHz/16meg/1.6gig/built in monitor - $325
PowerMac 7200/120MHz/32meg/1.2gig/Apple 14" monitor - $375

For all three, I can get another 16megs RAM for $55.
And upgrade to a 15" for $30 on the two 72's...

Keep in mind, this is all in Australian dollars... RAM is ridiculously pricey over here at the moment, especially the type they take, isn't it?

Now, are those prices ok, or a rip? I have no idea. I will most likely get two of them... hopefully two of the 7220's.
They will only be used for network terminals, basically. File sharing, Internet (browsing, AIM, email), word processing/spread sheets etc. So I don't need any real power. I may use one as a hotline server or something, or a web server eventually.
The G4 will handle the heavy stuff, and the 5500 will take whatever the G4 doesn't.

So... prices ok? Which one, considering I can't spend a fortune? Of course I'd like two 7220's (I've had lotsa experience with 5260's and 7220's), but the price of the 7200 is rather good... I have spare HD's to chuck in the 72's, so having a smaller inbuild Hd doens't particularly matter...
But... any ideas? Probs with particular models?
They'll most likely run OS 8.6...

i currently own a PM5200/75MHz, my first purchased mac!
and a PM7200/90MHz(my linux box).
i don't know if the PM5260 has any pci slots, i don't think it does so, this may be something you want to think about. i.e. you won't be able to add a second ethernet card (for setting up a router/firewall, if you were ever so inclined).

i run os 9 on the 7200, i was running linux for awhile, but os 9 runs fine at 90MHz, so it'll be fine on the other models, especially if these are going to be network workhorses.

the monitor on the 5260 might not be adjustable. mine on the 5200 wasn't at all, only via control panels, so there were no geometry controls, although i never had a problem with it.
the other thing is that the resolution on the 5200 was either 640, or 800.

also the all in one design is nice, but if the monitor goes, you are out of luck. the monitor conection in that thing isn't a vga or anything like that (if i recall).

Well, I think I've counted that one out. Its out of the 7200 and the 7220 now, and I think I'll take 2 7220's if possible

Option 4: If you see a PM 7600, GRAB IT. One of the most expandable and easiest upgradable PMs Apple made.

stay away from any 5XXX machines, they seriously are some of the worst machines I've ever dealt with. We've had nothing but problems with them.

I'd go for the bigger boxes, more room to expand.

the 7220 is totally a rip. I have seen a beige G3 DT with 32/4/CD for $489. Awesome price.

If you only have the choice of the three Macs, go for the 7200/120.

The 7220 (also known as 4400) was Apple's first try to use cheap PC components heavily. You have to use special RAM modules that are not common with any other Macs, the case is a poorly built tin can, no ethernet on board, three PCI slots (but with one of them being slightly different) - forget it if you can.

The 5260 on the other hand is just a variation of the 5200/6200 Performa series, a never ending saga of problems regarding serial ports, especially. Except for comm slot and/or LC slot, the 5260 is not expandable.

I am strongly supporting Westbo's opinion. If you can get your hands on a 7600, get it. With it, you will have the best enclosure Apple ever manufactured, processor on an exchangable card, easy to cahnge RAM and drives, and so on.
