This may sound trivial, but ever since i upgraded to 9.1 the status bar showing the progress of my download that appears on the desktop isn't there. Instead i just get a blank page icon. Anyone else have this problem?

You mean using Internet Explorer?
No, mine works fine with IE 5 and OS 9.1. Try rebuilding your desktop file.
In case you didn't know, this can be done by holding down the option and command (the one with the apple on it) keys while booting. Press them as soon as the extensions loading screen disappears and hold them until you get a dialog box asking you to rebuild the desktop.

spicyjeff's right. after installing anything, especially the OS, always rebuild the desktop as part of the ritual. alot of problems are solved like blank icons and applications not recognizing file types.
