I'm in desparate need of a word processor for OSX and I don't want to pay for Office X. Is Apple works 6.2.2 for OSX any good?

I don't need anything fancy, just the ability to create and print in a "Word"-like program and maybe make a simple spreadsheet or two in an "Excel"-like program.

What's the vote? Crap or Inexpensive bargain?

I use it regularly, and IMHO it's a very good suite of apps--not as powerful as Office v X (which, BTW, I also have), but perfectly adequate for most users.

if you are thinking about buying it now , you should wait a little longer , until MWSF , because maybe there will be a "real" X version of AppleWorks . I like what it can do , but now I think it doesn't fit in with the rest of Mac OS X yet . It's perfect for doing everyday tasks .

6.2.2 squashed a lot of bugs, Appleworks performs very well, there are some old UI components which look out of place, but it gets the job done quickly and easily.

The functionality is ok, but the interface is ugly and (as was already said) is ugly.

AppleWorks can do just about everything the common user would ever need to do. And while you're at it, pick up the "AppleWorks 6:The Missing Manual" as well. It's the best combo.

For a brilliant cocoa based Word processor I'd recommend Okito Composer: http://www.okito.net/composer/

AppleWorks is good... if you're on OS9. However, it is the archetypal Bad Carbon Port on OSX. It's bug-ridden, and looks-wise it's just plain awful. It gets the job done if you're careful to dance around the bugs (as I currently do), but it's everything a Carbon app should not be.

Hopefully, MWSF will change this, though I somehow doubt it. In the meantime, consider Okito. Heck, even TextEdit isn't really all that bad, if you put it into RTF mode.

its a bargain, inifinitely better than Office, much much simpler and easy to use, assuming your needs are fairly simple, you wont go wrong.

I've written three novels on AppleWorks and I find it fills my needs just fine. Office is just overkill for me. When I can figure out how to male pico or emacs double space as I type I'll be even happier.

we use it here at home and while not as logical as some other applications, it does a fine job of word processing and simple spreadsheets.

Appleworks is handling my dissertation just fine.

I'm just hoping that the rumors of a new and vastly improved AW are true....

Cheers
