So a friend linked me to an article about a cinema in Texas holding shows of Wonder Woman for women only and the fact that lots of men were throwing a hissy fit about it, but more interesting in the preamble the author stated there had been approximately 130 movies based on comic books since 1920 or so. He then said that of those, only 8 had female lead characters.

So without cheating and looking them up, can anyone name 8?

Myself and one friend came up with a list of 8, but I suspect some are debatable and there are still one or two we didn't think of as well.

Our list:

What counts as lead? Title character? What about movies centered around some sort of team, do they count for neither side then?

(Also: since 1920? I like to think that we have improved since then. Give me a count of how many comic book movies in the last 20 years and the stats might be vaguely useful)

Anyway:

I question whether TV movies should count... especially when they're pilots.

I figure teams don't count either way unless they are all the same gender.

The article didn't mention superhero so I figure any comic is fair game.

big screen movies? I'm not up on comic books, I mean Lulu and Minnie Mouse might count as comic book, but not be superheroines.

Left out Vampirella. I mean, if you're going to count Red Sonja...

I think that if we include books, it becomes hard to grasp - there are hundreds of movies every year based on books.

Little LuLu was made into a series of animated theatrical shorts in the 40's. Plus, there were some live-action specials in the 70's.

AFAIK, she was created by the person who plays her as a "live" character, though I'd be shocked if she hadn't licensed it to comics at some point.

I took the 'rules' of the question in the OP to be feature length cinematic releases from 1920 onwards, based on comic books with one or more female lead characters, teams must be all female.

It struck me as an interesting pub quiz question. I think its proved so. I still feel like we must be missing one or two obvious ones.

My friend, who's way into comics, was confused by 1920.

He argued (and wiki more or less agrees) what we think of as comic books didn't really become a thing until the 30s.

If the floor is 1920, it has to be including characters from strips.

I figured that year was picked more for the movies than the comics. Its basically a century of cinema, nice round number.
