I actually used one at a local coffee place yesterday and it was surprisingly nice.

The UI was really clear and good, on a very nice screen. It's a good 1.0 attempt at this type of product, but it isn't perfect by far. However, the openness of the platform make it an interesting one for developers.

Seems to be selling well, see /. article for more info & critique:

I will remain loyal to Apple.

So will I, but they need to make one. Apple's design team is so incredible...just imagine how pretty it could be.

Components keep getting smaller and cheaper, batteries keep getting better and a number of interesting new display technologies are moving from vaporware to reality. But the currently available combination of these components doesn't quite cut it.

The Nokia is surprisingly heavy, and after using current generation iPods it feels really thick. It doesn't have enough memory to perform multi-tasking graciously, and it can't be upgraded.

So it's close, but.

I think Apple will be getting in the game at some point, but not quite yet. Maybe the next generation of iBooks will provide some hint of the possible niche between them and the iPod.

I was thinking about getting one.

Doesn't the browser use safari webcore?

Is there a keyboard on the thing? I think that would be the limiting factor for me. While handwriting recognition has come a long way, I can type 5x faster than I could ever write.

I love the idea... and am sure Apple could do it the right way.

Right! That was my main reason for buying the Psion 5MX years and years ago(it still lives, ducktape does it's duty well ) Because the Psion is such a fantastic machine(crippled but still awesome) no company never made anything remotely similar, which, in my opinion, is a shame. The Nokia 9500 is a good effort, but slightly too small for rapid typing use. So a high end PDA with a reasonably useable keyboard would be welcome. Nokia is THE company to manufacture such a device, they own Symbian, a great start!

It didn't look like Opera, which they've used before, but typing 'about://' in the adress field returned 'Opera' and some other stuff.

Edit: I really should've refreshed and seen Judge_Fire's post before posting...

The Nokia 770 is really nice and it even costs less than my Nokia 6682 smartphone. The NokiaUSA.com site didn't mention Opera 8, but I heard Nokia also involved with the open source community for a web browser.
