Hey Guys,

I am having a bit of difficulty with some questions in Biology. Was wondering if anyone could lend a hand?

In the carbon-oxygen cycle, how are the processes of photosyntheseis and respiration interconnected?

In terms of biogeochemical cycle of carbon, explain why global warming (the greenhouse effect) is increasing.

Describe how ozone is formed in the stratosphere.

Describe how an ozone hole over Alberta (Area is irrelevant) could affect agriculture and the human population.

If anyone could answer any of these questions, or point me in the right direction, it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like someone has an assignment due soon.

I'm a biology major, but man. Those are straight textbook questions. Try Googling them!

people get burned to death by the sun... they melt, it is really quite gross

Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are related because they both derive energy through oxidative phosphorylation.

In animals, mitochondria (basically) break down sugar and fatty acids into ATP, which is in turn used by the cells to do everything. The most important step is the electron transport chain, which ultimately binds ADP and an inorganic phosphate into ATP.

Plants do basically the same thing in chloroplasts, only their mechanism of electron transport is different.

Carbon and oxygen come in when discussing their place in the cycles. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into sugar (and ATP); they also absorb water and use a photon to split it into a molecule of oxygen. Animals then eat the sugar and it is broken down into pyruvate (and ATP), which is further broken down into carbon dioxide (and more ATP). The oxygen that animals breath in is used to bind protons at the very end of the ETC, forming water.

water + carbon dioxide --> oxygen + sugar
sugar + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water

If you really want to get in depth, I'd Google the following terms:
"Glycolysis"
"Gluconeogenesis"
"Krebs Cycle"
"Electron Transport Chain"
"Photosystem I"
"Photosystem II"
"Calvin Cycle"
