How do I make my delete key in OS X function so that it deletes characters proceeding the cursor, like delete in unix? I tried key combinations such as shift-delete, option-delete, and command-delete. Anyone have any idea?

I have two delete keys the delete key ← which deletes the character before the cursor and the forward delete key ⌦ which deletes the character after the cursor. What other behavior are you looking for?

Use Function-Delete on laptops for forward deleting.

On a portable's keyboard you need to press fn and delete to get forward delete.

In Cocoa apps, control-K does forward delete as well. (There are a whole bunch of useful commands like this built into the Cocoa text architecture. It's a shame Apple doesn't do anything to make them known.)
