If you come you have to bring either wine or cheese.
Which do you bring? What kind? Why?
My favorite wine is Riesling from Washington state. I don't really have a favorite cheese. That's kind of why I started the thread. What cheeses should I have at my party? It's a holiday wine and cheese party and I don't want to serve Kraft Singles, you know what I mean?

An ice wine dessert wine. Very few people have tried this sweet type of wine.

I'm thinking a Brie de Mieux... if you know what this is, good for you.

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

WHAT the heck are alcopops?
But, yer welcome, Kerrigan! I've always wanted to meet you anyway. Tonya Harding bashing your knee was terrible - we're all glad you're okay.

Alcopops are sugary alcoholic drinks marketed towards younger buyers, like Bacardi Breezers, Smirnoff Ice, and Mikes Hard Lemonade.

Oh! I like Mike's Light.
But, this is a wine and cheese party.
I favor muenster cheese also.
And good aged Parmesan.

I need to take notes. I'd bring wine... and probably the aforementioned ice wine, even though it's pretty expensive and everyone only gets a very small amount.

I'm having some Turning Leaf Reserve Riesling tonight.
And a wedge of Maytag with some candied walnuts. Piquant delight.

Interestingly, Francis Ford Coppola makes decent wine. A local liquor store carries it for around $8/bottle, which is much cheaper than the grocery stores. I like the Claret.

I was joking. Sewer water is still "water," but that doesn't mean I'd drink it.

Too busy having a good time to notice any flavour. You can sit up your corner muttering to your bearded friends about how the hops really shine through but I'll stick with having a good time with the chicks, thanks.

I don't know anything about hops, and I'm not much of a beer snob. You don't have to know anything about cola to know that Sam's cola isn't as good as Coke (and that Coke isn't as good as RC Cola!).

That brie is good when it's not ammoniated, sometimes it comes a little too stinky. My favorite cheese to go with red wine is The Drunken Goat from Spain. It's a yummy cheese that has bathed in red wine. Humboldt Fog Goat Cheese from California is also amazing, as is Manchego and Idiazabal, both from Spain.

Well regardless of the season, a good cabernet is always in order. I am partial to Kendall Jackson, but there are a lot of great cabs out there. Guess the best way to go is get some opinions, then buy a few bottles and take mental notes on which ones you liked. And don't get sucked into the expensive=better deal either. Most of my favorites are around $12 or $15. As for cheeses, well beyond the standard holiday tray assortment I don't have much to suggest. Just the usual suspects--smoked cheddar, swiss, colby jack, muenster, provolone. Anyway, have a good party.

I would love to come to your party Cody. I'm sure that it will be awesome, because you are the hostess.
My choice would be cheddar and Swiss cheese, delicious.

I recommend a good aged sharp cheddar. My favorite is Black Diamond. I like the 2 year old extra sharp cheddar that is white - no fake coloring added.

I would bring some Stilton and a powerful Chilean Red.
There is only one shop in Shanghai where you can get real Stilton and its pretty easy to spend 50$ on a small piece, but it tastes absolutely incredible. They airfreight it from London.
IMHO Stilton should not be bough in those little porcelain pots you get in supermarkets and department stores, its not good. You need to go to a real cheese shop and get them to cut if from a giant one.

Swiss cheese is just a marketing gimmick, where regular plastic tasteless cheese is sold at a higher price to gullible (american) customers.

Ok now people, let me put some good sense back into this mess of a wine and cheese party.
First of all, red wine with cheese only. Always. Not beer, not a riesling, not a white zinfandel (!!), and especially NOT a dessert wine. Dessert wine is for D-E-S-S-E-R-T (look at its name). Cheese is NOT dessert. It is supposed to come after the main courses, right BEFORE dessert. That is it.
So red wine only. Don't forget the bread. Baguette is de rigueur. Anything else (like crackers ) is sacrilegious.
Get a good Vacherin Mont D'or. This is winter it is for sale again. It rocks.
That is it.
You are welcome

More info about the Vacherin, please. Sounds French or maybe Austrian?

French. Made in the Jura Mountain range. It is an AOC (controlled origin label). It is basically a cow milk cheese that is aged in a round wood box. The thing is pretty creamy, has some very nice wood after taste on the edge, and is literally to die for.
can be sold to consumers between sept 10 and may 10 only. can be made between august 15 and march 15.

Since you live in DC you might be able to find it at La Cheeserie. Can't think right now where exactly it is.

Thanks for the info.
Restricted manufacture and sales times? Sounds like the Beaujolais Nouveau of cheese.
Speaking of which, anyone know how this years batch turned out? I haven't been able to get to the store yet to buy some.

Part of the Calvert Woodley wine store. (A great store by the way.)
Info here ( http://www.wineaccess.com/store/calvertwoodley).

I don't like wine. The taste the smell etc make me feel like I'm gona hurl. This one time at an anglican church where my professor was getting ordained I forgot about the fact that they used real wine in communion. So I went forward, tipped my head to the cup, and BAM I think I must have made the worst face anyone has ever seen after taking the blood of Christ .

a couple of nice Camenberts, baked in the box, a nice brie, chilled, a strong cheddar, with some walnuts in it and some quince jam.
You'll also need a box of assorted crackers to go along with the cheeses.
For wine I'd recommend,
a Rioja Tempranillo, I like Campo Viejo but Faustino VII is as good for the money
a chilled Brown Brothers Tarrango (yes, its a red, and yes you chill it)
a Sauvignon Blanc and a Reisling for those who like their whites. Chardonnays are no good with cheese (imo).
