(image below, sorry dialup)

I've noticed my server (Beige G3 w/ G4-450/352MB/10.4.5) has been really dragging lately. I took a look at the activity monitor and noticed kernel_task taking up more RAM than any other program, and user 'root' was doing a lot of other stuff. Is this normal, do I have a memory leak, or is there another problem? Before I quit all apps, I was running Airo, Bittorrent, and BOINC (predictor).

Yes, it is normal, it is normal for PID 0 to report a large consumption of resources.

But my iBook under a heavy load doesn't have half that many processes. What are all of those?

Well you are running quite a few services on it, webserver (httpd), WindowFileSharing (nmdb, and smdb), AppleFileSharing... You are probably not running those on your iBook

I'm running all three of those on my iBook. But my iBook about half as many total process as this has just under root. I still think something's not right...
