I'm looking to upgrade slightly to a Quciksilver or Digital Audio Mac and was wondering whether one would be noisier than my current B&W with a G4 500 upgrade card in it?

I gather that the answer is probably yes, but I would very much like to have a machine capable of deep sleep again as I have to turn it off when it bothers me.

i could never leave my QS on in the same room that i sleep in. Mines in the next room to the bedroom and it's noticeable to me with both doors shut.
it's not so much loud, more it's at a certain pitch that travels well!
cutting off the fan grills helped a lot and changing the fans also.
Plus getting quieter hard drives help in lowering the pitch, both of mine are Seagate ones, that was a big improvement.

there are loads of threads and websites about this.

I have a G4 DA (Sonnet 1.2GHz). I have left it on, and could sleep in the same room. I have now replaced all fans, even less problem with my sleep. QS, is said to be much more noisy.

Doesn't sound great, but I could do with some added oomph.

I think the main problem is that stupid 60mm intake fan. If you get a quicksilver, just get a gigadesigns upgrade with it's OWN 80mm fan, then unplug that damn 60mm piece of crap. Mine is about half as loud as it was with that fan running, and I've seen no noticeable temperature increases. Do it at your own risk, anyway.

I was a G4 Yikes owner (same as B&W G3) and switched to a Digital Audio G4 and the Digital Audio is quieter. It's in the same room I sleep in and I never turn it off. The OEM hard drive was kinda whiney, but I replaced that almost immediately when I bought it.

I just purchased a new G5 and it is near silent compared to the Quicksilver I had before. That thing was a damn windtunnel.
