I hope this is the correct forum to post this in.
I have an iMac operating on Mac OS 9.0.4. I use MSIE 5.0.
When I try to access a secure website, I get the following message:
"Unable to establish secure connection with ----- .
Problem with the security certificate. (Identity of the certificate issuer is unknown.)
Any information you send could be visible in transit."
It doesn't happen with all secure websites, just a few. From what I can gather, it is because the site owner and the security certificate's issuer names don't match. Is there any way to fix this problem? The website's tech people weren't helpful. (It's your problem, not ours! )
Somebody suggested I go buy a Windows computer ( ). I would like to avoid that if at all possible!
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks in advance!

Thanks, Fredo... I downloaded the new version of MSIE. Unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem.
This is so frustrating! Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

That's because Fredo assumed it was a problem with your system. It isn't.
It's a problem of the site owners'. They didn't get verisign/thawte or some other verifiable certificate for their site, so their security isn't verifiable- what that means is, with a cert, you can show that the data you're sending is going to them. with a cert that isn't valid or verifiable, the data link is secure, but where it's going to isn't necessarily as certain.
But it's their end, not yours.

Thanks for all of the help
So... My only hope of logging on to the site involves convincing them to change their security certificate. I doubt they'll listen to me. They already think it's my fault.
I guess I'll have to look into buying a Windows laptop.
Thanks, again!

I'm pretty sure there must be a less drastic solution...
VPC? A different browser?

Windows is always a last resort!
What is VPC?
As for the browsers, I've tried 2 versions of MSIE and Netscape. Safari won't work for me because I use OS 9. Are there any others I should try?
Thanks

Hi,
I guess the suitability of a solution depends on how important the need to access the secure site is...
VPC is Virtual PC... a program which allows you to run Windows and Windows apps on your Mac. You could easily run the latest version of Explorer, or any Windows browser.
The only limitations of this, are that it will be pretty slow to run, and also you may have to pay a not insignificant amount of money for the software (in the UK about 100)...
However next to changing your Mac, it may be worth it.
As for other browsers for OS9, hmm, you have me! The only other one I could think of is Opera, but I don't know if it is even still made!
I'm also wondering if you post the query in the software forum and OS 9 forum, more people may be able to suggest possible solutions...
Peace,
Marc
