I just saw this MacCentral article about the top 500 super computer ranking.
They talked about the reason why Virginia Polytechnic G5 cluster is missing from the super computer list altogether due to hardware upgrade (is that the PowerMac G5 -> Xserve G5 upgrade they talked about)?
Now, isn't Virginia Polytechnic originally rushed their cluster last year to make it into the top 500 list, because of university funding etc are indirectly related to the computing power the education institution it has? If so, how can Virginia Polytechnic pass such opportunity so easily this time??
Can someone explain it to me?

IBM can't make 970fx processors fast enough (or at all).
970fx processors go in the new Xserves.
Apple can't ship Xserves without processors.

No, the bit I don't understanding is: is they are not on the list, you might not get additional research funding, right? Don't they want $$$$$?

Who cares about this cluster, when we got the US army/Xserve cluster, which will be the second most powerful in the world.
