We're almost ready to launch SafariSpeed 2.0, a major upgrade to our critically-acclaimed SafariSpeed utility. Our initial private tests have been extremely positive, but we are looking to get a wider pool of testers before we do a full-fledged public release.

A brief overview of what's new:
* Optimization of the existing features (page loading delay removal and favorite icon disabling)
* Support for enabling/disabling the cache
* You can now enable/disable the Debug menu using SafariSpeed
* Enable/disable Safari's built-in PDF support
* Enable/disable brushed metal interface

As you may have guessed from looking at this list, we have rolled the features of our other applications (Safari Debugger and Safari Aquafier) into SafariSpeed. Safari Aquafier was never compatible with Tiger; the feature in SafariSpeed is.

You can download the most recent beta here: http://www3.scifience.net/beta/SafariSpeed-2.0.dmg

We'd love to hear your comments and suggestions.

Support for enabling/disabling the cache
Does this mean it will prevent Safari from ballooning to 500 MB? Or is that mostly still memory leaks?

This is mainly memory leaks, I'm afraid, and they aren't in WebKit, but in Safari itself. However, it prevents Safari from sucking your hard disk space, and makes pages load more quickly depending on the speed of your connection.

I put it on a G4/2x1GHz, 1.5GB, State University net connection (can you say faaaaast?)
Disable cache, load delay, and favicons

Initial impressions tell me it's snappier on the loads. Browsing apple's site is a bit quicker, loaded my school's website is faster too. My personal website loads almost instantly too (pic heavy.)

Nice product!

It is, by default, one second.

I'd love to try it, but will it clash with Saft installed?

Its feature set does not overlap with Saft's, so, as far as I know, it should not.

It doesn't act as a plugin like Saft, and its changes are all fully reversible.

Cheers! Anything that can reduce page-loading times is cool in my book.

Downloading now...

And neither is there a page loading delay. Only the display of the new page is delayed to avoid flickering.

You sure? Safari usually takes x-amount of time before displaying a page, but after this, it starts displaying the page near instantly.

SafariSpeed removes the delay that is in place preventing Safari from displaying parts of a page as soon as they are loaded. It does NOT make the page load faster; it only makes the page appear on the screen more quickly.

Yeah, that's what I mean, it displays the page quicker - be amazing if it could load my pages faster

Very cool.

Made Safari display pages a lot faster for me.

You don't. It is released under the GPL, just like the current version, which explicitly states that the developer isn't responsible for anything.

Testing

Cool. Turning off the cache removes that irritating Safari MacNN message edit phenomenon where you'd be editing only a previous version of the message. It also makes it easier to test a webpage in progress of course.

It'd be nice to see SafariSpeed as sort of a check box design though. When you first load the app, you never know what's on or off in Safari. Is there any way of checking that in the app? Lots of dialogue boxes too that you have to click through. Otherwise, I like.

P.S. I seem to notice the page delay on my iMac G5 2.0 more than on my MacBook CD 2.0. The MacBook draws the page faster though, so maybe that's why.

I could store which options have been selected in a preference file, but this would not take into account any modifications which had been made with other utilities, such as Safari Enhancer.

Some of the settings (like the page loading delay) could be read from existing preference files, but this wouldn't work for all the settings.

We're looking into a way to do this in a future version (probably 2.1), but it won't make 2.0. At this point, 2.0 is "feature-complete," and we're just looking for bugs.
