It's not amazing, it's crazy, in the bad way.
If my neighbor did that, I'd call the cops and have them pore over the books to find something to fine them for.

It has to do with decorations and creating an atmosphere. And would wood have been better? Or aluminium?
I have not seen the video as I am not able to at work, but I assume it is a bad Christmas display. What I want to know is: what does making fun of someone's taste in Christmas decorations and posting a video of them on the interweb have to do with christmas?

For a "neighborhood decoration contest," that was completely awesome! Synching to a really great TSO piece (and doing it very well too) and the variety of different lights makes it very amusing.
But, as tooki says, if my neighbors did something like that - and they did it for the whole season - I'd be pretty irate.
Decorating your house to celebrate something is cool. Going all "Griswald" and decorating every twig and blade of grass is just crass. And a big display that's done well and tastefully can be pretty nice, though most people go overboard from the get-go.
My front porch has a very nice, wide arch, so I hang lights from that-this year, I'm thinking of "icecicle" lights for a change. That's ALL the outdoor decorating I do. Oh, and I don't do it until well into December, either; we actually celebrate Thanksgiving, so we like to keep things sort of separate...

You guys are ****ing pussies btw. As long as he wasn't blaring music, who cares. I live in the city. Cars and stuff drive by all the time. Sometimes you hear a siren, sometimes you hear a train horn in the distance. Only hting that I wonder is if that is ACTUALLY sync'd like that, or if he took still pics and edited them in a computer to make that movie...

I wasn't thinking about the music -- I never assumed they played loud music.
It's the flashing that would drive me nuts. That literally could induce seizures in epileptics.
And it was ugly.

Well, Christmas took the place of pagan midwinter festivities. Even in the days before Christianity it was customary to decorate houses and trees with lights, to remind, and implore, the sun to return again.

Not to be rude, but your post was a waste of electricity. And the last time I looked, Iowa was PART OF the United States... Oh, and "Americans" is supposed to be capitalized, too.
The entire universe will die in an entropic whimper at about 3ºK some time in the distant future. How much sooner will that be because of a light show that may only be presented once in a great while? Christmas lights don't really use much power by themselves, you know. If this person is running the display 24/7, yes, that's a waste and something that will bother his neighbors, too. But if it's an occasional thing, it's not a big deal-and not nearly as much of a waste of power as 99.999% of commercial TV. Or 99.99999999999% of the Internet.

About as much as Christ has to do with the winter solstice.

Well, apparently one cannot post certain things here without fear of reprisal.
First, yes, Iowa is a part of the US, and believe me, I am very glad not to be there anymore. I moved out as fast as I could.
Second, I am not from the US, I used to live there, and I witnessed over and over again the contempt most of Americans have for the environment. The US consumes 25% of the world energy, having only 5% of the population. I don't think it's fair.
Third, you are underestimating the effect of Christmas lights. Only in California, Christmas lights increase the electricity consumption by 1,400 megawatts a day (according to official reports). Most of that electricity comes from oil or coal, which in turn generate their share of greenhouse gases.
Granted, most of TV use is gratuitous, but it still serves a purpose, which is entertainment or education. The internet is a useful tool, and I would ask you to back your 99% datum about wasteful use. I am working at the same time I am posting this, and I'm sure a lot of people do the same thing.
I am not against some seasonal decorations. However, those over-the-top displays are not only a SIGNIFICANT waste of energy. They are also completely superfluous and of very bad taste.

I agree that over the top displays are a waste, and if the display in the link is run all the time it sure qualifies as over the top. But that's not the real point here.
The U.S. is the only major industrial country not devastated by the Second World War, and our industrial prowess is not only what helped turn the tide for the Allies, but what rebuilt Europe and Japan after the war. The U.S. established the industrial model that most other countries have adopted. We use 25% of the world's energy with only 5% of the population? Those numbers sound accurate. But how much of the overall world's food supply do we produce? How much of the world's raw materials do we produce? How much of the industrial output for the globe do we produce? Combined, all those things counter the concept that Americans simply waste energy out of hand or because we're stupid, or both. We produce a whole lot of what makes the whole world work, and that takes energy.
You should also factor into your assessments, by the way, the energy cost of transport of the materials that come from the U.S. and go into products made elsewhere. For example, iron ore and steel scrap that goes to Korea to become finished steel has to cross the Pacific ocean to get there; is that an energy cost that belongs to the U.S., or to the Korean company that bought the scrap?
Finally, I take offense at a gratuitous opportunity to take a pot shot at America by anyone, particularly someone who lists his location as "A Crummy Place in Iowa." You had the opportunity to see what Middle America is like. The Agricultural Heartland is great if you're into agriculture, but as you found, the nightlife tends to be less than stellar. But remember that Iowa is just a small part of the U.S., and it only represents Iowa. Don't judge the whole country by one state.
You seem to be basing your statement on either limited exposure or a jaundiced view, and either way it's not fair to the millions of Americans who both pay attention to and care about our environment. And to further that, I spent my adult life serving this country, and anyone who simply spouts off (pretty much off topic, I must add) against this country in such a negative and unpleasant way gets me unhappy really fast.
So I can agree with you that constant, over-the-top, gaudy and unlovely light displays that pay no attention to the season they putatively celebrate are a bad thing and wasteful of energy and the time anyone uses up looking at them. But lighten up; for a "performance," I though this was innovative and amusing.

So what if the Americans use 25% of the World's energy? With that 25% they went and made Michelle Pfeiffer and Angie Harmon. That's good use of resources if you ask me, well worth it.
I f'ing detest whiney little hippies.
Keep up the good work with the lights fellas.

Yes we use up all these resources so VoicesInMyHead can play on computers and go on the internet to complain about using resources.

Las Vegas... tacky? Didn't know there was such a thing!
I dunno... I don't think we should over do this to one-up the neigbors--thats not the meaning of Christmas. But I do think we can add a little more life to it that what you have depicted...? As long as its not about your egos vs the neighbors' and as long as it isnt disturbing anyone, i think its fine.
well unfortunately I cannot watch wmvs... too lazy to download WMP.

Speaking of christmas lights, I was checking out the LED ones. Nifty! A set of 70/9ft sucks up 5 watts...
I don't get all the complaining about energy waste, because there's tons of ways to waste it, just as there are to conserve it:
A desktop can suck up a good 200-400 watts at any given time, more if you're using a big CRT monitor, same goes for TVs; Laptops only suck a faction of that.
Many TVs today are also equipped with some sort of set top box, that again sucks anywhere from 20-100 watts even when idle.
Very few people use CFL bulbs and instead opt for the cheaper bulbs -- 60 watts vs 9-14.
Cars? What about the hypocrites who buy hybrids to drive themselves around all day? If you really want to save some energy, go grab some people from the carpool places!
Oh well, at least we pay for it dearly. Too bad that money doesn't actually go to anything useful.
